Jamie xx reunites with The xx bandmates on new track ‘Waited All Night’

Jamie xx has reunited with The xx's Romy and Oliver Sim on a new single, ‘Waited All Night, shared yesterday (September 18).

It marks the first time The xx have released music together in seven years following their third and final studio album ‘I See You’, which landed in 2017.

The childhood friends performed the new track at Glastonbury 2024 in a nostalgic throwback to their days playing together as a band.

Unlike The xx's past productions featuring electric guitars and live drums, ‘Waited All Night’ is an energy-raising, club-focused dance track with vocals from both Oliver Sim and Romy.

Speaking about the collaboration, Jamie says: “Thank you to my two best friends and musical siblings, Oliver and Romy. It's wonderful to have the gang back together, working in new ways, working out new lives, I wouldn't be here without them.”

‘Waited All Night’ is the sixth single to land from Jamie xx’s forthcoming album ‘In Waves’, slated for release September 20 via Young.

The highly-anticipated 12-track LP will be the producer’s second solo project following his 2015 album ‘In Colour’, which was nominated for awards including GRAMMY, BRIT, Ivor Novello and Mercury Music Prize.

Created over a period of four years, ‘In Waves’ replicates the ‘emotional crescendos and thrilling volatility of an almost mystical night out’, according to a press release.

The unveiling of The xx’s reunion single follows a continuous stream of releases from the album since April this year, including ‘Baddy On The Floor’, an anthemic collaboration with Honey Dijon.

Then came ‘Treat Each Other Right’, a daring, sample-infused electronic track, followed by ‘Life’, which saw Jamie xx join forces with Swedish singer Robyn, marking her first new release in six years.

More recently, Jamie xx shared ‘All You Children’ featuring The Avalanches, and ‘Dafodil’ with Kelsey Lu, Panda Bear and John Glacier.

It’s been a busy year for Jamie with his recent residency at London's Venue MOT, The Floor. Previewing every song from ‘In Waves’, Jamie played 10 nights in a row, inviting the likes of Charli xcx, MJ Cole, Daphni, Nick Léon, Jockstrap, Axel Boman, Two Shell, Lil Silva, and more to join him on stage.
