The xx are back in the studio working on a new album, Romy reveals

Romy has revealed that The xx are back in the studio working on a brand new album some seven years after the release of their last studio record, ‘I See You’.

The group - which consists of Romy, Jamie xx, and Oliver Sim - are said to be working on a “wide open” and “exciting” new record, according to NME.

Romy told the publication that the anticipated next release is in the works, although it’s still early days. “I still think you’ll be able to tell it’s us but I think we’re excited to move it on and keep it feeling fresh,” she told NME.

“I think Oliver [Sim] and Jamie [xx] and I have all tried new things and learned a lot from different projects and I think that’s quite healthy to be like, ‘What have you learned? What should we do now?’,” she said.

“I think it’s quite wide open and it’s exciting to be starting again in a way. But we’ve started making some music and I’m really excited about it.”

The trio have been working on solo projects since the release of their last studio album in 2017. Last year, Romy released her debut solo album ‘Mid Air’, which peaked at number 15 in the UK charts.

The group revealed that they were back in the studio in September 2023 following a “necessary break” where they were experimenting with new music.

Romy told Apple Music’s Matt Wilkinson during an interview that the trio “have a laugh about it together,” but still have no idea about their sonic makeup.

“If you get some trance pads from me, and Oliver wailing and then Jamie with really hectic drums - we were laughing,” she joked. “But I think that we have a lot of love for the sound we create with The xx.”
