Miami duo Coral Morphologic have teamed up with Nick León on a debut collaborative record, titled ‘Projections of a Coral City’.

The five-track album lands on April 5 via Barcelona-based record label Balmat, and will be available both digitally and on vinyl. The first track from the record, titled ‘Deep Call’, is out now. Check it out below.

‘Projections of a Coral City’ was born in 2022 after Coral Morphologic created a projection-mapping installation over the Miami skyline, which imagined “how the city might look if global warming is neglected”.

The project was displayed for five nights on Biscayne Boulevard, showing macroscopic films of corals over the walls of Knight Concert Hall warning of rising sea levels and “colonised reefs”.

Coral Morphologic - made up of Colin Foord and musician J.D. McKay - are best known for their work in marine biology through music, art, and other multimedia projects including an underwater live webcam showing Miami’s marine life and reef ecosystem.

The record ties together these themes, using “watery” soundscapes against moody and ambient electronic textures over the span of five tracks. It marks the first collaboration between the Miami trio.

‘Projections of a Coral City’ takes influence from other “aquatic” music work, including Jürgen Müller’s ‘Science of the Sea’, Harold Budd’s “liquid piano” compositions, and Dr. Roger Payne’s ‘Songs of the Humpback Whale’.
