Merker ‘Na Na (Massive Mix)’ (HARDLINE)

With the new generation of UKG highfliers on the rise, Huddersfield’s Merker has cemented his name in the scene with a few specialty hits, including his latest HARDLINE outing ‘Na Na (Massive Mix)’. This speed garage heater has all the makings for a prime time club banger — hardy bass, choppy drums, and that signature garage wobble.

Randomer ‘DHM JAM’ (MAMA TOLD YA)

Good news mind melt connoisseurs! Randomer is back after a five year hiatus with a five-tracker brimming with intensity, primed and ready to blow your synapses clean off. While we’ll have to wait to sample the full record, second single ‘DHM JAM’ pairs speedy techno with dark-spanning synths, all underpinned with a handful of tongue-in-cheek nods to UK bass — including a punchy sample of AJ Tracey’s ‘Wifey Riddim’. It’s London-meets-European techno in a manner that only Randomer can pull off.

Sakura Tsuruta 'Obsidian' (All my thoughts)

Tokyo-based producer Sakura Tsuruta looked to gemstones as the inspiration for her latest album ‘GEmz’, released on Seb Wildblood’s all my thoughts imprint; with each of its eight tracks taking on a different mineral crystal. Not sure what it says about us that a standout was the hard, fractured, black volcanic glass… ‘Obsidian’. Tsutura uses jagged breaks, frenetic percussion and bewildering synths to encapsulate the dark, sharp exterior of obsidian — though still manages to retain a glistening, shiny atmosphere with an array of twinkling hi-hats and trickling bass.

Ell Murphy ‘Need It’ (Greco-Roman)

There’s something downright devious about pairing up punchy kicks, a grinding piano melody and addictively catchy lyrics; so Ell Murphy, we need to have a word. The London-based artist has enlisted the help of Medlar to create a rolling backing track that pulls in references from speed garage and all-out organ house euphoria — though to be completely honest, we’ve been unable to get Murphy's silky vocal declaring “I need it I need it” over and over again out of our heads since our first listen.

Byron the Aquarius ‘Baddest Behaviour’ (toucan sounds)

Atlanta mainstay Byron the Aquarius joins forces with NYC vocalist Brandon Markell Holmes for an infectiously funky house tune. Propelled forward by an uplifting beat and an alarm-like synth progression, ‘Baddest Behaviour’ simultaneously sits deep in its heels, weighed down by thick, warm chords that resound throughout. Meanwhile, Markell Holmes delivers straight fire with his catchy “Put that body in motion” lyric, that could be straight out of a Miami bass track. The single comes with two remixes, one from Dam Swindle and another from toucan sounds boss, Robert PM.

Last Nubian feat. Queen Sherine ‘Desolate Place (Find Me)’ (Eglo Records)

Arriving ahead of Last Nubian’s latest EP, ‘Desolate Place (Find Me)’ is a beautifully restrained house track with a light, splashy beat that occasionally leans into broken beat, but quickly rejoins the four-to-the-floor track. The delicacy of this rhythm allows the soft and soothing vocals of Queen Sherine to shine through in all their glory, complemented by deep, soul-quenching chords. The liner notes describe the EP as “a love letter to London and its diasporic community of musical creators, innovators and celebrators” that bounces between “cities like Detroit, Chicago and New York”.

Buksta, DarkFace, DJ IC ‘Tornado’ (All Shades of the Drum Recordings)

UK Afro house stalwart DJ IC teams up with South African producers Buksta and DarkFace for the second time following summer’s ‘Equilibrium’. Yet again, the trio drop some serious 3-step goodness with ‘Tornado’, a heavily percussive and darkly synth-filled Afro house track that sees DJ IC’s British roots fusing with the signature sounds of his collaborators. Just wait for the breakdown in the middle… This one’s about to go off on many dancefloors.

FKA twigs, Koreless ‘Drums of Death’ (Young)

With a new appreciation for the techno scene, FKA twigs has dived deep into the industrial sounds of the genre. In this new release, twigs teams up with Koreless to merge her ethereal vocals with a pulsating bass drumbeat. In fact, Koreless made the instrumental version of the track on a flight to Berlin to perform at Berghain. The pair have previously worked together, such as twigs directing the video to Koreless’ ‘White Picket Fence’ as well as Koreless producing on twigs’ 2019 album ‘Magdalene’. This single is set to feature on twigs’ long-awaited next album ‘Eusexua’.

Featuring on ‘piano1’, a new compilation of piano compositions from section1, mark william lewis’ esoterically titled ‘Josh, this is Lin, i accidentally left my documents in your car yesterday’ is a blissfully autumnal sounding piece with soft keys chiming melodically in a haze of ambience.

River Moon ‘CHUDAI’ (SAINT DEEPTHROAT RECORDS)

Chudai. An ancient slang term - possibly of Hindi/Urdu origin - with a lewd definition has gone viral among queer corners of the internet that aren’t shy about the X-rated. A perfect track title for River Moon, then, whose music deals in hot, heavy and sexy vibes. ‘CHUDAI’ begins on a pulse of pleasurable groans and kicks, setting the pace for escalating synths, acid lines, pneumatic percussive hits and seductive repetition of the title fuelling the track’s intensity.

NAINA ‘I'd Rather Be Here (Than Anywhere With You)’ (Hooversound)

The first single from NAINA, taken from her upcoming debut EP ‘Survival’ which lands in February, is an emotional heater which channels the feelings of release you have as a raver on the dancefloor — and that an artist might have upon reaching the stage of being ready to put their music into the world. Building up a brooding but potent atmosphere with echoey synths, irregular percussion and warped vocals that confess “I just don’t feel it…”, the track then launches into harder hitting territory with the question “you wanna feel?” and the introduction of rolling breaks and choral chanting as the dial turns up.

Chloé Caillet ‘Sugar’ (SMiiLE Records)

Chloé Caillet wants to spread joy, and this cut from her new EP ‘Here To Make You Smiile’ is mission accomplished. Bringing together a euphoric blend of bouncy synths, silky vocals and an irresistible beat, it’s a guaranteed mood-lifter and spark of light in this dreary descent to winter.
