Ivan Smagghe ‘Origins Tapes 142’
Some prime Ivan Smagghe for your listening pleasure, as the atmosphere virtuoso takes us on a typically spine-tingling journey through pulsating synths, fervid low-end bass and trickling percussion on his go at London party series Origins’ mix series. A little shuffle here, a bewildering acid riff there, all while utilising the kind of records that sound restlessly familiar while still being completely uncharted. Crack this one on, and you’ll be salivating at the idea of being lost on a sweaty dancefloor within moments.
Neffa-T ‘Crack Mix 568’
Few can pair up divergent tempos with such fluidity while still remaining wholly unpredictable as Neffa-T, and this mix for Crack is a shining example — pounding through high-energy groove one second and delving deep into dense dubstep the next, before applying a shockwave of hard-as-nails techno as soon as you have allowed your brain to recalibrate. The result is an electrifying hour that will have shouting expletives towards your speakers in sheer delight until the final throes.
Lagoon on NTS
Prestige Pak’s Lagoon serves up all the good stuff in one place on this NTS show, with a selection of just about everything you want to encounter in the club. Jeremy Sylvester, check. Kaskade’s remix of David Morales' ‘Here I am’, check. A gqom edit of Benny Benassi’s ‘Satisfaction’, check. There’s even a tongue-in-cheek drop of ‘Deepest Blue’, in reference to Lagoon’s penchant for blue bodypaint. It’s nice to be fed!
Steven Julien 'DJ-Kicks: Steven Julien' (!K7 Music)
This one’s a special one as Apron Records head honcho Steven Julien drops his highly anticipated ‘DJ-Kicks’ mix. And he doesn’t hold back. Featuring an array of talented artists, the whopping 22-track record starts out laid-back and melodic, with tracks from the likes of Ryuichi Sakamoto, dreamcastmoe and Chaos in the CBD spanning soul, R&B, boogie and jazz. As the album goes on, the pace picks up, but not in a simplistic, steady way as Julien plays with us, leaning into heavier elements and then easing up again, as every good DJ should.
We next see contributions from Todd Edwards, Suze ijó, DāM-FunK, and Kyle Hall. Then Josh Caffé comes through with a deep and dirty club banger – the kind of song that should only be listened to in absolute pitch-black darkness. From here we are immersed in the underground, with the sounds of acid house, techno, electro and d’n’b, before finishing off with another beautiful track by Ryuichi Sakamoto to release all the tension.

'nohup' ‘Campout Mix Series’
A recording from Hemlock Nights at beloved queer festival Honcho Campout, this two-and-a-half hour set from Seattle’s 'nohup' is a masterclass in conjuring a magical dancefloor atmosphere. Moments that truly took our breath away include a heavily pitched-down spin of Pearson Sound’s Hessle Audio classic ‘Blanked’, turning it from club-wrecker to a wistful tearjerker that sends tingles down the spine; the puzzingly sublime edit of Limp Bizkit by Romanian trio Los Bastoneros; and the sexiness of a blend that pairs sleazy, scuzzy electro and a deep house Nelly remix.
Kiernan Laveaux ‘RA.963’
