Rinse teams up with Project 6 to celebrate 30th anniversary

Rinse FM has joined forces with Project 6 for a day festival that celebrates 30 years of the iconic radio station that has been at the heart of the UK underground, an integral part of the formation and rise of genres such as grime, dubstep and UK funky in the '90s and '00s.

Starting off as a pirate radio station that Geeneus started with a group friends, including the "godfather of grime" Slimzee and grime star Wiley, as they were told they were to young to go on air.

Rinse originally broadcasted from a tower block in Tower Hamlets, east London and, with several close encounters with the law, transmitted from almost every other tower block in the east London region before obtaining its Ofcom license.

Since turning legal in 2010, Rinse has welcomed thousands of worldwide talent which including current residents 1985 Music, Chris Stussy, Hessle Audio, Ilian Tape, Jossy Mitsu, Jyoty, KETTAMA, Skin On Skin, Uncle Dugs, and even more now that it is part of a wider radio group which also includes a Paris-based station of the same name as well as Kool FM and SWU FM.

Credited for bringing the likes of Dizzee Rascal, Julie Adenuga and others through, Rinse FM gave stars such as Maya Jama and the aforementioned Jyoty their first radio show. In conversation with DJ Mag, Geeneus said that he would rather have "the new thing than the big thing", reflecting Rinse's ethos in always putting talent forward, regardless of age or experience.

Hip hop behemoths Freddie Gibbs and Madlib will team up for a performance celebrating 10 years since their 'Piñata' album, and are joined by Benga, Casisdead, Mala, sim0ne, Shy FX, Taylah Elaine, Vigro Deep and, of course, Katy B as some of the first names announced for the day festival set to take place on May 24 at Brockwell Park.

It wouldn't be a Rinse festival without a performance from Katy B, who made it into the top five of the UK charts off the back of her album 'On a Mission' which was released by Rinse and Columbia Records and included hits such as 'On a Mission' and 'Lights On (feat. Ms. Dynamite)'.
