Ninja Tune and Beggars Group this week announced their commitment to running as carbon negative companies.
The announcement came ahead of Earth Day on Thursday April 22. This past week was also ‘Turn Up The Volume’, a week-long campaign run by Music Declares Emergency to highlight the work being done in the music industry to move towards sustainability.
In a sustainability statement on their website, Beggars Group have committed to converting to carbon negative business operations by the end of 2022 for their UK operations and 2024 for their US operations.
Ninja Tune are committed to being carbon neutral by the end of this year, and carbon negative beyond that.
Methods of achieving this include switching to 140g vinyl for all vinyl releases, reducing staff travel and adopting lower-impact supply chain techniques. Both companies have also switched to all-renewable energy sources for their London offices.
For some unavoidable carbon emissions, the companies will invest in carbon offsetting schemes which actively remove carbon from the atmosphere.
Beggars Group, which houses labels like 4AD, Rough Trade, Matador, XL Recordings and Young, and Ninja Tune are both founding members of IMPALA’s Sustainability Taskforce. Established in March 2021, it encourages European independent music labels to work collaboratively to address issues of sustainability and climate disaster in the music industry.
