Applications for Saffron’s Artist Development 2022-23 project are open now

Saffron Records is welcoming applications to its Artist Development programme for 2022-23.

The project supports three Black women and non-binary music creators in the South West of England with the opportunity to elevate their careers with the help from Saffron.

Centred around a paid commission from Saffron, those selected will create a musical work which explores the chosen topic of human relationships with technology.

This year’s topic has been chosen by the the Bristol-based collective, who state that it looks into the “deeper foundations for better visibility, representation and financial benefit for Black music creators in our area.”

As well as commissioned work, those selected gain 1-2-1 mentoring, a year membership to Saffron, a residential artist retreat, music masterclasses, a live event as well as optional support with creative direction and collaboration opportunities.

Earlier this year, Saffron launched its first zine to be shared with schools, youth clubs and colleges as well as 40 tech kits for Black women, non-binary, trans and gender non-conforming creators.

The new zine included the likes of Zakia, TAAHLIAH, Xana and Princess Trium with 3500 free copies to be distributed to young people with the aim to inspire future generations.

Alongside this, music tech kits with educational resources and production tools including Ableton software and production hardware have also been made available.
