A Kickstarter has been launched for a new book celebrating women in house music

Written by Laila McKenzie and Ian Snowball, it features a foreword by Carl Cox and interviews with over 150 women who have contributed to the house music scene

A Kickstarter was launched this week to fund the publication of a new book by Laila McKenzie and Ian Snowball, ‘Lady of the House’.

Featuring a foreword by Carl Cox and interviews with over 150 pioneering women in house music, it will celebrate the women who have played formative parts in the formation and continuation of house music over the years.

The range of interviewees spans the globe and includes legends like Candi Staton and Barbara Tucker, Manchester’s own DJ Paulette (pictured), and Defected co-founder Janet Bell, as well as newer house music artists like Netherlands-based Black Girl/White Girl.

A fuller list of interviewees includes DJ Maxinne, Lynn Cosgrove, Rowetta, Ellen Allien, Nicky Trax, Julie McKnight, Kathy Brown, Anja Schneider, Ultra Nate, Jocelyn Brown, Arielle Free, Rochelle Fleming, Gladys Pizarro, Abigail Adams, Anne Savage, DJ Rap, Kym Sims, Judy Griffith, Kym Mazelle, and more.

Laila McKenzie is an events manager and promoter from Bristol who has been active in the house music scene for over two decades, and set up her company Fr808dom as a holistic solution to the challenges faced by marginalised members of the electronic music industry.

Ian Snowball is a writer, and has written and compiled over 30 books, his thirtieth being ‘Marshall Jefferson: Diary of a DJ’ which he co-wrote with Marshall Jefferson himself.

The Kickstarter is set to £25,000 to cover the cost of printing and distribution. McKenzie and Snowball will donate £1 from every book sale to the Night Time Industries Association’s Savenightlife CIC to further develop their diversity and inclusion initiative #Wearealllinthistogether.
