Pepe Roselló’s Space Ibiza trademark has been annulled by a Spanish court

Pepe Roselló’s trademark to the Space brand has been annulled, in a decision by the Valencia commercial court.

In a dispute between Fiesta Hotels & Resorts SL, owned by the Matutes family, and Pepe Roselló, businessman and founder of Space Ibiza, regarding the use of the “Space” brand, the court has ruled in favour of the Matutes family,

Reported by Diario de Ibiza, the ruling is dated back to June 28, and “upholds the claim filed by Fiesta Hotels and annuls the registration of the trademark 'Space Ibiza ' that Roselló made in 2008.”

The judge has made this ruling based on the confusion “of a nominative and graphic nature with the logo and the trademark 'Space Ibiza Dance', registered in 1991 and whose owner is Fiesta Hotels.”

The decision also affects other associated brands with Space Ibiza, including: 'Space Dance Barcelona', 'Space Dance Madrid', 'Space Beach Club’ and 'Space Ibz Planet’.

Palladium Group, which owns Fiesta Hotels, is now reportedly exploring “precautionary measures” to shut down the current Space Ibiza party, which is currently held every week at Eden nightclub.

The court’s decision marks the latest ruling in a lengthy case between Roselló and the Matutes family, which began over the management of the Space nightclub (now Hï Ibiza), which was rented by Roselló from the Matutes family.

Roselló has pointed out that the ruling is only in affect within Spain, as well as indicating that he plans to appeal the ruling.
