125-year-old theatre in Ibiza to relaunch as live music venue

This May, Ibiza town's historic building, the Teatro Pereyra, is set to re-open as a live music destination — following a 16-year restoration.

Aiming to relaunch as a "social and cultural hub of Ibiza," the 125-year-old building will include a cutting-edge theatre, live music venue, cocktail bar and lounge, according to a statement.

The now-multidisciplinary venue hopes to play host to a year-round programme of creative acts, including cinema, performing arts and live music from the local and global stage.

Sharing the intention behind the restoration, Pedro Matutes Barceló, Pereyra’s owner, explained: “We intend to revive the traditional spirit of the theatre, serving as a communal space for both locals and visitors to mingle, allowing people from all walks of life to connect and indulge in a rich array of cultural and leisure pursuits".

Teatro Pereyra's theatre room, featuring hydraulic platforms, comprises 256 movable seats, a Meyer Sound surround system and state-of-the-art visual technology, all to be guided by the artistic hand of Spanish musician and composer Nacho Cano.

Café Pereyra is set to function as an eatery by day, transforming into a live music hub by night with views of the “best-preserved Renaissance wall in the Mediterranean”.

Teatro Pereyra's cocktail and lounge bar, Sala Sandoval & Compañía, is located on the first floor with views of the medieval town from the terrace and a design said to evoke Cuban culture.

First built in 1899, the colonial-style theatre was the “cultural meeting place" of the Balearic island before falling into disarray over the last 30 years.

Teatro Pereyra has now been designated a Cultural Heritage Site (BIC) by the regional government, thanks to its historical French design and cultural significance at the turn of the century.
