Sheffield's Gut Level raises £10,000 towards renovating new venue

After facing numerous setbacks in recent years, queer and creativity community, Gut Level, has successfully raised £10,000 to finalise renovations for its new home in Sheffield.

The creative collective is scheduled to open its doors on March 22, with the new venue space offering events, workshops, grassroots activities and equal pay for artists, "regardless of following".

A not-for-profit DIY venue and dance community, Gut Level aims to provide social and creative opportunities for marginalised groups by focusing on affordability, accessibility and inclusivity.

Originally opening as a nightclub in 2019, Gut Level has faced several setbacks over the last four years, including an eviction in 2022.

After finding a new home in 2023, organisers successfully raised £58,000 for renovations through a mixture of fundraising activities, including events and a GoFundMe page.

Due to unforeseen challenges that arose during this time, the creative collective launched a second GoFundMe, hoping to raise a final £10,000.

Gut Level took to Instagram to appeal for support to help cover final costs, as well as share updates on the build: "This project has seen numerous setbacks and challenges as a result of the layout and condition of the new building" organisers revealed.

Continuing, the statement reads: "All of these challenges were unknown to us at the start of the project, but we have persevered through despite mounting costs and at times, dwindling enthusiasm for what has sometimes felt like an impossible task."

At the time of writing, the goal of £10,000 has been achieved, with organisers sharing thanks for the support received.

"We’re taken back by the amount of support, love and kind words we’ve received, we can’t thank everyone enough", organisers wrote via social media.

"We’re sure the Chapel Walk space is going to be finished off with all of this warmth, love and solidarity in it’s fabric" continues the post.
