The best tracks of the year 2024 - March - Music - Mixmag

Nourished by Time ‘Hell Of A Ride’ (XL Recordings)

This track, which is about the fall of the American empire, is an absolute vibe. While Nourished By Time, AKA Baltimore musician Marcus Brown, croons about terrifying realities of the modern world, capitalism, isolation and inequality (sample lyrics: “Young breathing in them toxins / used to have third place now they got no options / and I don’t see that shit stopping”), his jangly melodies, dreamy synths and tuneful, not-quite-shouting vocals are a comforting accompaniment as we circle the drain.

Camila Cabello ‘I Luv It’ (feat. Playboi Carti) (Geffen / Interscope Records)

Camila Cabello is embracing chaos and it’s the first time we’ve felt moved by her music. The former Fifth Harmony member’s time in the spotlight has largely consisted of releasing inoffensive jams, PR stunt romance accusations, staying sensible with her bestie Taylor Swift, and being a princess in a panned fairy tale film adaptation. But this month she began her hyperpop era with an unexpected guest feature from the King Vamp of trap Playboi Carti and sparked playful plagiarism beef with Charli XCX. The single ‘I LUV IT’ is an intoxicating mess — with big, brash synths, a hurried chorus refrain (which does sound like Charli’s ‘I Got It’), Carti phoning in a verse which trails lazily into gibberish, and a high budget video featuring both artists looking totally incongruous when stood near each other. Somehow, it works? It’s fizzy, addictive, and the fact that major label resources have been poured into contriving this dopamine hit of guff makes it more appealing, in a way. Better to be bewildering than beige.

Lighght ‘Babycakes’ (Self-released)

You never know how much you need a Balearic edit of a UKG one hit wonder until it floats through your ears on SoundCloud surf and puts you under its dreamy, 12 minute spell. Stretching those immediately recognisable vocals to sound breath and atmospheric against a backdrop of magical melodies and gently lapping waves, it’s a double dose of comfort, wrapping nostalgia in blissful textures.

Soichi Terada 'Mount Amazing 2' (Far East Recordings)

Soichi Terada’s latest six-track EP ‘Apes in The Net’ - a selection of music created for the Ape Escape game series - acts as both glittering insight to the Japanese house maestro’s illustrious archive, and yet another example of how Playstation 1 video game music just slapped differently. While the entire EP acts as a bewildering double jump up memory lane, ‘Mount Amazing’ is a clear standout — with its pulsating breaks, scattered synth stabs and trippy bassline, the track demonstrates how Terada managed to employ heady rave reference to create a piece of music with an unmistakable air of 32-bit optimism.

Laksa ‘Tech Steppas’ (Ilian Tape)

Laksa knows a thing or two about low-end deconstructed bass, so it’s no surprise that the London-based producer's latest outing on Ilian Tape, ‘IT062 - Voices’, is packed with earth-shattering percussive bangers. It’s impossible not to become enraptured by the OG-dubstep inspired ‘Tech Steppas’ — a five-minute track that deploys sweltering atmosphere and off-beat rhythm to create a club-ready cut that will have you on tenterhooks from the first play. A masterclass in suspense.

Rico Nasty, Boys Noize ‘Arintintin’ (Sugar Trap, Atlantic Records, Big Beat)

The intro with Rico Nasty repeating “arintintin-tin / arintintin” is one of those bouncy and hyperactive melodies that’s just as infectious as the track that follows. Stirring up the sounds of Eurodance and industrial techno, Rico Nasty and Boys Noize have delivered a catchy and cheeky banger. Rico takes a step back from full-tilt rapping, instead embedding some of attitude into the odd flirtatious lyric such as: “Give me the bling bling, I'd cause a scene / My skirt is teeny, I makе 'em fiend”. The pair have been working together since 2018, and an EP fuelled with more of this energy is to come later this year.

A haunting intro drags you straight into the depths of bassline — there’s no messing about with this track. Need a drop? Nah you don’t, it’s non-stop. Blanco hops on the mic with force as he spits out some cut-throat bars to the backing of the dirty production skills Interplanetary Criminal has whipped up. A raucous bassline, a wheel-up and even an interlude of creepy piano make ‘Races’ feel like a unique take on what happens when UKG meets UK drill. This is one of those tracks you can guarantee you’ll feel deep in your chest once dropped in the club

A stand-out feature of this record is an electric guitar that leaps out from the overall composition of the song, sliding across the sounds in a sultry solo. ‘Overflow’ is the ideal tune to oversee you from sunset into the evening, easing you into a hypnotic night.

Ahadadream, Skrillex and Priya Ragu ‘TAKA’ (Major Recordings/FFRR)

Laced with a variety of musical influences, ‘TAKA’ is the kicking, kinetic creation of Ahadadream, Skrillex and Priya Ragu, inspired by the South Asian spiritual pratice of Chin mudra. This melting pot of a record combines the artistic flavours of the three musicians in a feisty, feel-good tune. Drawing an energetic core from Ahadadream’s tastes in gqom and UK funky, ‘TAKA’ takes Priya Ragu’s R&B vocals and chopps them into tactile percussion-esque samples. Skrillex’s distinct creative stamp is audible in this evolution of voice. “We’re feeling okay”, comes the euphoric break from hard-hitting percussion, leaning into Ragu’s vocal strengths and cementing the visceral joy felt in ‘TAKA’.
