The best DJ mixes of the year 2024 so far - October - Music - Mixmag

Carlos Souffront ‘There Is No Elektro Music Department Mix’

Detroit-born, San Francisco-based selector extraordinaire steps up for There_Is_No_Planet_Earth’s mix series with a heady mix of low-slung, analogue-sounding records. Tagged with the genre ‘Religion & Spirituality’, it’s a real trip through the fuzzy, dubby crates of one of dance music’s best DJs.

Doula ‘SORRYMIX37 - Live at Bossa Nova Civic Club’

Described by Sorry Records as “easily one of the best sets we’ve ever had at a Sorry party”, this live recording from Doula lives up to that high praise with a totally captivating two hours that isn’t afraid to absolutely go in with fierce, dynamic selections that will have you frothing to have been there among the astonished attendees on the dancefloor. Absolutely essential.

Mike Servito x Jeffrey Sfire ‘The Bunker Podcast 233’

When Mike Servito and Jeffrey Sfire came together to close I.T. Presents The Bunker in May this year, they were scheduled to play two hours, but the vibes were so high they ended up extending to five. Now you can hear the set in all its glory, bringing jacking house, sleazy electro, lively new wave, off-kilter acid and more.

Verraco ‘Mixmag Cover Mix’

Verraco asserts his status as one of the very best DJs in the game right now with an enthralling 90 minute mix that traverses intricate percussion, sizzling bass, dreamy pads, urgent vocals, and much more among its hybrid explorations.

RONI ‘Fresh Kicks 214’

Nehza Records label head RONI crafts a greazy set of unstable bassweight and floor-ready tempos, with plenty of yelp-of-approval-inducing moments as she skillfully blends between heavyweight low-ends and light-on-their-feet rhythms.

TOCCORORO ‘Dazed mix’

Cuban-Spanish speed demon TOCCORORO lets rip with a mix of hardcore rave sounds and irresistible Latin rhythms. Self-describing it as “dark, sexy and funny”, it’s pure energy as it pile drives through bouncing beats, assertive vocals and cuts like FC Kabagar’s ‘Joga Bonito’ which blends teary-eyed expressions of love for football with relentless techno kicks.

dogheadsurigeri ‘FFS213: (2000s Ibiza's Trance Mix 2.0)’

dogheadsurigeri is developing a reputation for her mastery of trance mixing, and rightly so. This sequel to her first 2000s Ibiza’s Trance Mix is another flawless ride through serotonin-boosting euphoria that will have the flitting between pumping your fist and staring with eyes wide in wonder and hairs standing on the back of your neck.

Confidence Man in The Lab LDN

Confidence Man bringing their one DJ, two dancers show to The Lab LDN was guaranteed to go off. With veiled member Reggie Goodchild holding down the selections and vocalists Janet Planet and Sugar Bones bringing the dancing vibes either side, it’s a rip-roaring set that epitomises why Confidence Man are on the most fun dance acts in the world right now — packing in plenty of edits of their tracks and their own remixes of other artists.

S-candalo ‘RA.956’

Sibling duo S-candalo, AKA THC and DHC, demonstrate exactly why they have become the poster children for Berlin’s searing house revival — combining proggy slow burn with frenetic Latin percussion and old school Paradise Garage-tinged euphoria. While the decadent rhythms of Rhythmic Entity’s ‘Get Up’ and Sauza Doble’s ‘The Fly’ collide and shatter against each other in the mix’s hypnotic build up, a smattering of carefully employed pop edits, particularly Shakira’s ‘Underneath Your Clothes’ and Mariah Carey’s ‘Say Somethin’’ lend a buoyancy to the latter half. A traditionally-crafted mix at heart, but with new-age trimmings.

Beatrice M. ‘Untitled 909 202 (100% bait)’

Kaleidoscopic kicks meet rough-edged, fizzling breaks for Beatrice M.’s spine-tingling hour for Untitled 909’s podcast series. Consisting of tracks taken solely from the Paris-based percussion expert’s Bait imprint, this mix dithers through hypnotic bass squelch, looping synths and feverish dub — creating a deep tech soundscape that feels simultaneously dissected and tight-edged. While maintaining a sleek outer rim it remains capricious — enjoyable, while still keeping us on our toes.

HiTech ‘The Mix 033’

Is anyone doing racy club music right now quite like HiTech? Detroit’s premier Ghettotech maestros put sex appeal front-right-and-centre for their go at The Mix — combining sultry deep house with their trademark booty bass and raunchy vocal samples. While classic, certified heaters from DJ Slugo, DJ Assault and DJ Rashad are an obligatory feature — tracks from Yaeji, Park Hye Jin and Garneau add a smooth-albeit-divergent edge.

Ikonika on Balamii

Starting off deep and atmospheric, West London producer Ikonika spins some bass-heavy amapiano and groovy Afrotech, into a lighter, percussive UK funky finish. Demonstrating her knack for the craft, the DJ and producer knows just when to push and just when to pull, creating a seamless journey through razor-sharp log drums and crashing cymbals sandwiched between sexier summer sounds.

NIKS with Colored Craig on Rinse FM

NIKS returns for her monthly residency on Rinse FM, this time inviting the LA-based DJ Colored Craig to join her. Taking to the decks for the first hour, the South-East Londoner starts strong with a selection of classy club pleasers, whille showing her keen eye for the freshest sounds of the underground via several unreleased tracks. She is then followed by an all vinyl set from Colored Craig, who takes us back in time through style and sound, as he runs through the smoothest, funkiest cuts from Chicago and beyond. With a record collection to die for, this dancer-turned-DJ is one to watch.

Photay on The Lot Radio in LA

Perhaps best known for his genre-hopping productions, Photay joins The Lot Radio airwaves in LA for a warm and gentle hour-long mix that demonstrates the eclecticism of his musical tastes. Starting off in the realm of IDM, the set builds slowly into a more dancefloor ready direction, with all the various interpretations that can evoke. Think funk, highlife and minimal techno, but all with a distinctly analogue touch. Just close your eyes and let Photay do the work.

Introspekt ‘The Mix 032’

Bringing the “past, present, and future" into one 60-minute mix, bass, dubstep and garage purveyor Introspekt stepped up for The Mix in October with a theme of legendary dubstep party FWD>>. “There’s this idea in my music and a lot of my peer’s music as well where, as opposed to a linear, progressive idea of time, there’s this thread of more recursive or cyclical view of time and temporality,” she explains.
