Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Chancellor Rishi Sunak fined over lockdown parties

The Metropolitan Police have announced that Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Chancellor Rishi Sunak will be fined over breaking lockdown restrictions.

Partygate police have issued 30 more fines over lockdown law breaking totally the more than 50 fines for breaches of COVID rules in Whitehall and Downing Street.

Police have said that they were still assessing large quantities of “investigative material” that could lead to further fines.

Last month the Met Police announced they will be handing out around 20 fines to those involved in the parties that took place at Downing Street during COVID restrictions.

As explained by BBC's Laura Kuennesberg, Boris Johnson was in attendance at three parties: May 20, 2020, in the Downing Street garden; June 19, 2020, in the Cabinet Room for the Prime Minister's birthday; and November 13, 2020, on the departure of a special adviser.

The police said they would not be naming those who received the fines, but the government promised to reveal if Mr Johnson and Mr Sunak were among them.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said: "Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak have broken the law and repeatedly lied to the British public. They must both resign.”

He added: "The Conservatives are totally unfit to govern. Britain deserves better."

In May 2021, police were called to shut down an all-night party in Kent in which a 20-year-old who hired the Airbnb was handed a £10,000 fine for breaching COVID restrictions.

And in January this year, a former Radio 1Xtra DJ was fined £1000 for supplying an illegal rave with a soundsystem which was held days before the alleged Downing Street flat party.
