The Cover Mix: Bonobo

A sublime selection from our February cover star

Gracing the cover of our February 2017 issue is spellbinding Ninja Tune artist Simon Green aka Bonobo, who since the turn of the millennium has stealthily risen up the ranks to take position as the biggest live and album act in dance music.

As a DJ he takes dancers on musical trips, combining bold percussive foundations with soaring melodies to lift dance floors into higher realms of euphoria. Bonobo’s cover mix is a prime example of this energising approach, stylishly moving through cuts from Theo Parrish, Axel Boman, Denis Sulta and more. Listen to it and read Green’s explanation of the tracklist below.

1. Bonobo ‘Bambro Koyo’ Ganda (Ghost edit)

“Taken from the sessions for my new album ‘Migration’. I made this edit especially for this mix”

2. O’Flynn ‘Glow Worm’

“It’s been a great year for O’Flynn, this being one of the highlights”

3. Bonobo ‘Outlier’

“The third track from ‘Migration’. I tested out multiple mixes of it at my Output residency of the same name”

4. Theo Parrish ‘Warrior Code’

“Theo Parrish back on excellent form after a two-year hiatus. Heavy jazz aimed just left of the dancefloor”

5. Bonobo ‘No Reason’ (instrumental)

“Also from ‘Migration’, the instrumental of the Nick Murphy-featuring track”

6. Hot Chip ‘Atomic Bomb’(John Talabot remix)

“I’ve been playing this in my sets all year. John Talabot on the boards for Hot Chip’s William Onyeabor cover”

7. Kidkanevil feat Phasma ‘Inakunaru’ (Bonobo reshuffle)

“A re-edit I made a couple of years back of my friend Kidkanevil’s gorgeous song featuring Phasma. I strapped extra drums and bass to it so I could play it in my sets on 2014’s US DJ tour”

8. Soccer96 feat Swann Hunter ‘Flight Formation’ (Glenn Astro DJ-Friendly edit)

“The ever excellent Glenn Astro on the edit for Soccer96”

9. Music People ‘Always On’

"Fairly new to this one. A long builder. Love the way the vocal creeps in after a long wait”

10. Liquid Dope ‘Terra-Humara’

“I came across this one earlier this year. Percussion-heavy. Another permanent addition to my sets”

11. Axel Boman ‘Moon Dancer’

“Another great tune from Axel Boman. He’s always so good at the long build! This one rewards you after the big Balearic breakdown”

12. Youandewan ‘10405 (Alice)’

“A beautiful cut from one of my favourite albums of the year”

13. Denis Sulta ‘Nein Fortiate’

“Huge tune. I have fond memories of playing this out for the first time at Warehouse Project in November”

14. Gold Panda ‘Chiba Days’

“From his follow-up EP to the amazing ‘Good Luck And Do Your Best’ LP earlier this year”
