It'll be time for tears in Playa d'en Bossa when the clock hits midday on October 3. That's the time the last tune at Space is (meant to be) stopping as the club finishes a 20-hour farewell party. Next year will see Pepe Rosello's venue be taken over by the owners of Ushuaïa, bringing an end to 27 magical years.

In that time, parties such as We Love..., Carl Cox's Music Is Revolution, ENTER. and the admired, carnival-like elrow have set up shop, welcoming some of the best DJs from around the world. It was only right to speak to some of them and get their favourite memories from the venue.

Space might be getting a new home in San Antonio if rumours turn out to be true, but the below moments are evidence of why its legendary site in Boss will be dearly missed.

Kerri Chandler

"The last time I played for Carl [Cox] at Space will probably become my dearest memory. Heidi closed her set with Prince's 'Controversy'. I never saw so many camera phones on at once filming anything. Carl and Heidi were dancing in the booth before Carl took to the decks. I had never seen Carl dance like that before. Super happy and excited, so much love. Everyone had such a great time. From there I went on to DJ the other room right after, I was so emotional and overwhelmed and I'm grateful they let me extend my set for another hour and a half. I did not want to say goodbye to that place. Carl and the whole team were amazing. Carl and I ran through a ton of memories over the years and kinda got choked up a bit knowing Space was coming to a close soon. But knowing Carl, it's only the beginning of something even better. He's incredible as a DJ but even more as a great friend and a beautiful person."

"In the 90s, when I had my dreadlocks, I was supposed to play, but got stuck at the main entrance having a confrontation with one of the door guys who refused to let me enter. He thought I was a drug dealer because of my dreadlocks. I had my records ready to play but no ID, so they simply wouldn't let me in. It was before cell phones so I had to go back to my hotel and call the promoter, who couldn't believe it. 30 minutes later I came back to the club and was finally allowed in to play on the terrace."

Monika Kruse

"One of the most outstanding memories is when I did a meet and greet just before I played for Carl Cox and there was a couple. The guy came to me and said, 'it's a secret, but I'm going to propose to my girlfriend.' I was like 'erm, OK'. It's obviously a very intimate moment. He proposed backstage to her and I was so scared but excited at the same time. I was thinking, 'what will she say? Will it be yes? Will she say no?' Luckily, she said yes. I was almost shaking. It could've gone wrong. They were both big fans of mine so he wanted to do it before I played at Space. That was a very unique moment and I had tears in my eyes when she said yes. She was crying, she was crying. Everybody was crying."

"Being at one of Coxy’s Music Is Revolution nights at Space is a moment in itself. I played quite a few of them over the years but my Space moment comes from my visit there in 2010 playing the covered terrace. I decided to play an old-skool house set - any excuse to drop tunes I haven’t played in 23 years on that system. Carl wondered into the room mid-set and jumped on the mic. It’s not every day you have Carl Cox MCing for you, so that's definitely my Space moment. Thanks MC Coxy for the Space memories and experiences. Love ya brother!"

Carl Craig

"I think my fondest memory is when Carl [Cox] used to have a rocket man in the middle of the stage that used to walk around on stilts and have lights on. They had fireworks firing out of his ass. When I first played for Carl and saw that, that was my high point of being in Space. I also did my Detroit Love party there last year. Playing there with Luciano was great. Unfortunately I don't have a crazy story about getting lost in Space, though!"

Francesca Lombardo

"My favourite memory was when I went to see Aphex Twin in the main room. I walked into the room and was right in the middle of it and it was just amazing. I was surrounded by very old-skool ravers. It was like a next-level experience because I had never seen him before and I think he gets followed by a lot of old ravers, basically. It took me back to 15 years before, when I just got to London and used to go to these raves. The music and his DJing were amazing. That's the moment I remember the best and touched me more than anything else.

"Another time, at the end of the night, I left the club by mistake when trying to find the next room. I was by myself going to see where my friends were. I ended up going outside the venue, but if you leave in the last hour, you can't go back in. I went back to the door and I saw this guy thinking he was a bouncer. I started to say 'please, please let me in'. This guy's just talking to me like he was a bouncer. At the end, my friends came out and were asking who I was talking to, laughing. It turns out it was Martin Buttrich. He was just playing with me. I've never spoken to him about it before, but we are actually in touch. We became friends after it happened, but I've never told him."

“So many Space memories come to mind but probably my first ever time both visiting and playing at Space was possibly my most memorable. It was July 1999, I was very young and was booked to play the Discoteca before Carl Cox. Needless to say about 15 of my friends joined me to watch me play, get free drinks and get fully stuck in. After 15 minutes into my set I asked my best mate Alex how it was going and he pointed out the room was going off. I was juggling two copies of a track and playing a third backwards with my hand in time to the music. For some reason Coxy was over two hours late so I got to play four hours and I let rip and really did slay the room, playing Chaka Khan's 'I Feel For You' at one point. With two copies of some odd techno track juggled over it, of course. It was magical and the room erupted on repeat. I’m so happy I'm going to bow out of Space playing the same room on October 3. It’s one the greatest club rooms."

"I've been going to Space since I was about 17 and I'm 33 now so there's a fair few memories. The one that really sticks out was one of the first times going to the club in 2000 or 2001. There was loads of us lads, a few that hadn't been before, a few that had, so it was good vibes. The track I vividly remember being played on the terrace was X-Press 2 'Muzikizum' which I still play loads now. I think it was Jon Carter playing and I remember being with loads of mates, completely in our element, on the dancefloor. I think we were dancing with Sara Cox and Zoë Ball and someone from one of the early Big Brothers. It was a proper surreal experience. I played 'Muzikizum' on my last ever Terrace set at the club just to pay homage to that moment."
