HBO debuts trailer for upcoming Donna Summer documentary

HBO has released the first trailer for its upcoming documentary following the life of the "Queen of Disco" Donna Summer.

Due to land on our screens May 20, Love to Love You, Donna Summer has been co-directed between Oscar and EMMY winner Roger Ross Williams and Summer’s daughter, Brooklyn Sudano.

Using a mixture of footage from performances to never-seen-before at-home footage, this is said to be a “deeply personal portrait of Summer on and off the stage.”

Summer was known as the Queen of Disco for her hit tracks including as ‘I Feel Love’, ‘Love To Love You Baby’, ‘MacArthur Park’, ‘Bad Girls’ and ‘Hot Stuff’.

The trailer includes archive footage of Summer creating ‘I Feel Love’ with her husband, the producer Giorgio Moroder, as well as intimate never-before-seen recordings — including the late singer declaring: “I have a secret life. You’re looking at me, but what you see is not what I am.”

Family life will be explored in the documentary even though the trailer claims that “a lot of her life revolved around privacy and secrecy,” this film will include self-recorded home footage by Summer.

HBO’s synopsis describes the upcoming film to be, “shaped by Summer’s own reflections, the memories of close family, friends and colleagues, and filled with the sounds of Summer’s songs, ‘Love To Love You’, Donna Summer is an in-depth look at the iconic artist as she creates music that takes her from the avant-garde music scene in Germany, to the glitter and bright lights of dance clubs in New York, to worldwide acclaim, her voice and artistry becoming the defining soundtrack of an era.”

More recently Summer's name regained popularity after Beyoncé sampled ‘I Feel Love’ on ‘Summer Renaissance’.
