New club to open at Berlin's Tegel Airport, Turbulence TXL

A new club is opening this weekend at Berlin's defunct Tegel Airport, Turbulence TXL.

The venue's inaugural party, aptly titled "Lift Off", features Mareena, Philipp Johan Thimm, Lisbird, Saraab and a special back-to-back between Zebra Katz and S Ruston lined up for the celebration.

Tegel Airport, which has been closed since November 2020, was a popular destination for DJs and touring artists due to how quick it was to pass through.

Since closing it housed the sound art festival, Sonambiente Berlin TXL. The festival took place from August 21 to September 5 in terminals A and B.

The festival hosted talks, audio compositions, sound performances and a virtual reality installation from Laurie Anderson and Hsin-Chien Huang.

Performances from sound poet Blixa Bargeld, Nigerian artist Emeka Ogboh, Scottish sound artist Susan Philipsz and more were resounded from the ~1,000 loudspeaker systems in the empty terminals.

Turbulence TXL's launch party will instead take place in the former-airport's canteen, with a capacity of 700.

Following its eight-hour day party, the space will be open for live music, workshops and art installations as well as club nights, the space's mission being to "transform the franchtkantine at Tegel Airport into a creative hub."

Caro Pepe, Paula Riquelme, Honey, Max Rübensal, Anne Bengard and Spoare153 have already provided art to give the space a unique feel.
