Misbehaving Brits could be banned from Ibiza

Frequenters to the islands of Majorca and Ibiza in search of a boozy blowout have been warned by the Balearic Islands' new head of tourism that, if rules were broken or crimes were committed, they could be sent back home or banned from returning.

The local governments of the Meditteranean archipelago, which includes the islands of Ibiza and Majorca, are going over their tourism policies to crack down on tourists' antisocial behaviour.

In conversation with Diario de Ibiza, Jaume Bauza said that the municipalities have taken inspiration from Amsterdam's local government, who have taken preventative measures to ward off British tourists in the last year.

Bauza has commited to introducing fines for antisocial behaviour and to continue the four year moratorium on obtaining new tourist licences in the Balearic islands, citing the saturation of holiday locations after 115,000 tourist places were authorised in the eight years prior to the moratorium's introduction in 2022 as the reason behind it.

The Balearic islands' head of tourism said that nothing had been ruled out or confirmed, with the severity of punishment served for crimes or infractions committed still being ironed out. Options include, but are not limited to, blacklisting rulebreaking holidaymakers or sending them home on flights.

Bauza did however confirm that the main target of new policies discussed are "people who behave in a way that is not tolerable, here or anywhere."

The local governments' latest inquest into deterring drunk and disorderly tourists comes after a previous decree agreed in 2020 where £50,000 fines were introduced for tourists caught "balconing" (leaping off their balconies), mandatory closures from 9:30PM to 8:00AM for shops selling alcohol, and crackdowns on happy hours, free bars and two-for-one drinks parties.
