Selects: Justin Jay

Each week, Mixmag invites the world's most revered artists to bring us an Apple Music playlist, hand-selected by them and curated especially for your listening pleasure. From Kevin Saunderson to Disclosure, the Selects series has seen a spectrum of tunes come through from major crate dig gems to the freshest tunes that are moving your favorite talents today.

Quite literally the definition of a bedroom DJ success story, Justin Jay is a Los Angeles-based producer that, at only 23, has launched off into his career straight from his university dorm room. (Seriously, his last EP was titled 'Mom, I Graduated!')

Welcomed into the coveted fold of the Dirtybird crew as the youngest player yet, Justin Jay has swiftly justified his place with his signature style of funky, jazzy house music which of course, has received plenty of support from the likes of Claude VonStroke but also from Disclosure, Jamie Jones, Pete Tong and George Fitzgerald.

Following two solid EP releases, Justin Jay has now also seen through a unique album concept for his collective 'Fantastic Voyage (The Album!)'. Rather than a straightforward LP release, 'Fantastic Voyage' was divided into a series of EPs released on a handful of different labels to showcase the distinct difference between each set of tracks. Hear the 'Fantastic Voyage' album in full here. Black Butter, Soul Clap, Freerange and Repopulate Mars have all played host to Justin's latest concept and now, the wunderkind plans to make his own mark on the label realm with the introduction and launch of his Fantastic Voyage imprint.

Ahead of his round of upcoming festival appearances in the US including HARD Summer on July 30, Bass Camp in Bijou, California on August 6 and North Coast Festival in Chicago on September 4, Justin Jay delivers a robust playlist of his favourite tunes. Listen to Justin Jay's Selects below.

Roy Ayers 'Get On Up Get On Down' (Joey Negro Revibe)

I first heard Marcel Vogel drop this at an afterparty I went to in Perth while on tour in Australia. Been playing it nonstop ever since. That vocal and those marimbas... oof!

Alkalino 'Day to Day'

I know Loletta Holloway's vocals from 'Dreamin' have been sampled in a billion house tracks, but this one is pretty special.

Awanto 3 'Star Butchers' (Darling Edit)

A classic drum break sample and lush chords for seven and a half minutes. The little bell part that comes in-and-out is the icing on the cake.

Precious System 'The Voice From Planet Love' (Dixon's Chic-A-Go Edit)

This came out on Running Back in 2009. One of the funkiest Dixon edits I've ever heard. Lots of cowbell in this one! :)

Patrick Topping 'Captivate'

Part 4 of my 'Fantastic Voyage' album is coming out on Lee Foss' new label, Repopulate Mars. Patrick Topping held it down on this one. Been playing this one out for a minute. Always feels right.

Steven Wobblejay 'Shake Your Tingz'

I've played this one a couple times at afterparties this spring and it makes me smile. The vocal makes me smile and wakes me up when I feel like I'm about to hit that wall at 5am.

Tim Green 'Kitch In'

A classic Dirtybird jam. When I feel like getting a bit tribal, this is one of the first songs I'll play.

Bryan Kessler 'You Look Like Trunks' (Ludwig Zibell Remix)

Sometimes I like to get dark and weird. This EP is fire all around but I play this track the most.

Justin Jay & Friends feat. Ulf Bonde & Josh Taylor 'I See You'

Mixes great with the song above. This song needs a very low-friendly sound system. In the right context it can be the biggest track of my set. Super heavy and deep.

Fouk 'Gruff'

Fouk is one of my favorite producers right now. I love the chords and melodies he uses in his songs. This one is less jazzy and more disco-y than some of his other releases, but it feels just as classy.
