Primavera Sound Madrid cancels first day due to severe weather

Primavera Sound’s debut Madrid edition has cancelled its opening day due to “severe” weather conditions.

The event was proposed to kick off today, June 8, but was called off for safety reasons. Primavera Sound announced the news on social media earlier today.

“Thursday’s Primavera Sound Madrid has been cancelled for safety reasons in view of the adverse weather forecast,” the festival announced last night, June 7.

They added that “persistent severe weather” including heavy storms has affected the pre-production of the festival, which was due to be Madrid’s first-ever edition of Primavera Sound and sister event to the original event in Barcelona.

The opening day was called off in “coordination and agreement” with the City Council and local authorities, as well as its additional daytime events in Cívitas Metropolitano.

The opening shows at Cívitas Metropolitano will still go ahead this evening as planned, but with a delay due to “heavy rain”. Those due to perform include The Pet Shop Boys and Confidence Man.

“The programme of the Auditorio Primavera (The Music Station) for the day will be maintained,” they added.

Thursday ticket holders were offered entry on Friday or Saturday using the same ticket. Acts due to play today included New Order, Pusha T, Folamour, PinkPantheress, Rema, and Hudson Mohawke.

“Primavera Sound Madrid continues and will open its doors in the Ciudad del Rock in Arganda del Rey on Friday, June 9 and Saturday, June 10,” they explained.

“We will continue to keep you informed of any new developments through the festival’s official communication channels on the website and social networks. We apologise for any inconvenience this situation may cause and thank you for your support.”
