​Gary Neville on DJing at Kendal Calling: “What the hell am I doing?”

Gary Neville has shared his fears about his forthcoming DJ debut this summer at Cumbria’s Kendal Calling Festival.

The football pundit and former Manchester United player spoke to Geoff Shreeves on his podcast, Football, Music and Me, about his experiences with music over the years.

The pair touched on Manchester’s music scene and Neville’s upcoming DJ debut set to take place at Kendal Calling on Sunday, August 4, alongside The Charlatan’s Tim Burgess. Neville will perform under his new alias, DJ G-Dog.

“When I finished my football career, there were many things I did to put myself out of my comfort zone,” Neville told the host.

“I’m actually DJing with Tim at Kendal Calling, I mean… what the hell am I doing?” he joked. “I’m trying to wangle my way out of it, but I can’t once I’ve said yes to something.”

When asked if he’d ever DJ’d before, Neville replied: “Never in my life!”. He went on to add that he’s hoping to “just press a play button” when he steps on stage.

“Obviously Tim has [played] thousands of times, I’ll just be accompanying him. I’m worried about what I actually have to do, to be honest,” he said.

“Tim just said we’d play a group of songs on the Sunday night after the final acts are on, but obviously there’s loads of people still there,” he explained.

Kendal Calling attracts more than 40,000 people each year. This year’s headliners include Paulo Nutini, The Streets, and Noel Gallagher, who Neville has previously interviewed.

“A couple of months before, I’ll get together with Tim and see what songs we think people will want that time of night, and hopefully he’ll come up with a good setlist.”

The pair also spoke about Manchester’s music scene, which Neville said has a “rich history” and remains one of the “greatest strengths” of the city. “If you’re from Manchester, you can’t get away from the fact that the city has an incredible music scene,” he said.
