Bradley Zero and Nathanael Williams have announced the launch of a brand new venture in Tottenham, MOKO.

The new hi-fi bar will open its doors for the first time on Friday, August 18, and follows the launch of the pair’s successful Peckham-based listening bar, JUMBI, in 2022.

MOKO offers a similar setup to JUMBI, bringing the same “one-deck-hi-fi-restaurant-meets-blues-party concept” across the river from Peckham.

“For those in the know, the word MOKO is synonymous with JUMBI,” the team explained on social media last night. “Primarily known as a stilt walker character performed at carnival - the word traces its origins to West Africa.

“As an Orisha (God) of Retribution, Moko is the Ying to Jumbi’s Yang - a character that exists in Caribbean folklore as a healer, a protector and a deity, in contrast to Jumbi’s spirit - an archetypal trickster…”

The venue is due to set up shop on Tottenham’s Markfield Road where former nightclub Five Miles was forced to close in 2020. The cocktail bar-turned-club was shuttered in March 2020 due to the pandemic and ultimately lost its campaign for survival later in the year.

MOKO features a solid oak booth created by “one of London’s leading designers”, Don Heston, housing a “community vinyl library which will be home to regular contributions from our guests & residents”.

“Much like our beloved Jumbi, we’ll be shining a light on the sounds and flavours of the Afro-Carribean diaspora in a contemporary setting with Audiophile sound courtesy of London-based bespoke audio studio Friendly Pressure,” they explained.

As well as offering free entry, MOKO is also set to serve speciality coffee and vegan soul food from the venue’s resident chef on opening days, every Tuesday to Saturday from 12:PM until 10:PM.

MOKO celebrates its launch this weekend on Friday and Saturday (August 18 - 19) from 8:PM until late with special guest DJ sets, free drinks, and finger foods for those who get down early. RSVP here.
