​Death Grips respond to speculation about their split

Experimental hip hop group Death Grips have responded to speculation that they’ve parted ways.

The Californian group shared a rare statement on Instagram – their first post on the platform since 2023 – to shut down rumours that they’ve disbanded.

In February, an alleged leaked message from the group’s producer and keyboardist, Andy Morin, surfaced on Twitter, reading: “Yeah it’s over, Stefan doesn’t want to do any more,” referring to the band’s lead vocalist, Stefan Burnett (AKA MC Ride).

“But truthfully none of us can ever predict what will happen with the group,” the supposedly leaked message read. Morin has yet to confirm whether the leaked message was real.

On Tuesday, April 8, the group took to social media to dispel rumours. The post shows a framed painting hanging on the wall, with their own words written across it in marker pen, reading: “Despite rumour and hearsay, we remain active as Death Grips”.

Despite its confirmation that the group are still active, the statement is signed by just two of Death Grips’ three original members, Stefan Burnett and Zach Hill.

As fans point out in the comments, there’s no signature from Andy Morin, who helped to co-found Death Grips in 2010, and has remained an active member ever since, suggesting that the group will now continue as a duo.

Death Grips first formed in 2010 in Sacramento, California. The group originally disbanded in 2014, pulling from a scheduled tour where they were set to support Nine Inch Nails and Soundgarden, before coming back together to release an album in 2015.
