2Pac’s stepfather released from prison after 37 years

The stepfather of late rapper 2Pac (real name Tupac Shakur) has been released from prison after 37 years for medical reasons.

72-year-old Mutulu Shakur was originally sentenced to 60 years’ imprisonment in 1988 (originally arrested 1986), for being involved in a 1981 robbery of an armoured vehicle, which led to a security guard and two police officers being murdered, according to Complex.

According to his family website, Shakur was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer in 2019, and was granted parole in November 2022. He left prison last week (December 16).

A statement on the website read: “Today, the morning of December 16th, 2022, Dr. Mutulu Shakur was released from prison on parole!

“The decision to grant parole is based on federal law guidelines for “old law” prisoners, finding that Dr. Shakur poses no threat to the community, taking into consideration his exemplary conduct in prison, his medical condition and how much time he has served,” it continued.

“Mutulu is with his family. This victory was secured by the steadfast support of his legal team, his family and his community comprised of all of you.”

The decision, made by the U.S. Parole Commission in October read: “We now find your medical condition renders you so infirm of body and mind that you are no longer physically capable of committing any Federal, State, or local crime,” per Complex.

Before Shakur’s arrest, he was heavily involved in a number of activist groups, including the Republic of New Afrika – a Black separatist movement, and the Black Liberation Army.

He had reportedly suffered from numerous health complications in prison, including a stroke in 2014, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and vision problems from glaucoma.

Shakur’s stepson Tupac, was one of the world’s most influential rap artists of all time, who was tragically killed in a 1996 drive-by shooting in Las Vegas.
