From rubble to techno phenomenon: Celebrating three decades of Tresor
Tresor: True Stories details first-hand accounts and never-before-seen photos from the early days of the West Berlin rave haven
Tresor was never just another nightclub. Its roots reach back deep into West Berlin’s subcultural niches and Tresor’s emanations, like the eponymous label or the revived Berlin Atonal festival, extend into the present and beyond, critical reference points for electronic sound artists on every continent. Over thirty years ago, the legendary venue threw open its doors, just off of Potsdamer Platz where broken slabs of Berlin Wall lay prostrate on the hardscrabble. It triggered a global music movement that will always be synonymous with the city of Berlin – the world capital of electronic music, then as now.
To celebrate three decades of Tresor, we’re taking a peek at its debaucherous past (and present) through the brand new photobook book, Tresor: True Stories. This project, penned by multiple storytellers through Tresor’s history, looks at the phenomenon of the West Berlin club and where future incarnations might lead. From long-running fans of the club to those who witnessed the ‘big bang’ of techno in those inaugural days on Leipziger Straße, the new archival book explores how Tresor helped to forge a common German identity through first-hand stories from 40 punters and photos from 20 different photographers.
