The best DJ mixes of the year 2023 so far - November - Music - Mixmag

Florentino ‘RA.912’

Manchester’s Florentino delivers a typically high-energy hour for his RA podcast; rapidly manoeuvring between blistering dembow, bass-heavy techno, mind-altering reggaeton and more — the mix demonstrates his distinctive ability to amalgamate dark and buoyant rhythms at breakneck speed. Selections from the likes of OSSX, Nick Leon, as well as a plethora of handmade edits from the Club Romantico boss himself, make for a mix that will have you daydreaming over having your head far too close to a massive soundsystem.

Hessle Audio ft. GЯEG on Rinse FM

Taking the reigns of Hessle Audio’s Rinse FM slot, Parisian DJ and La Creole resident GЯEG rolls through low-end warmth and giddy bassslines for this two hour exploration of clubland eclecticism. Yo-yoing between mood, tempo and form, the mix employs tracks from the likes of Jack Chrysalis, Peverelist, Farr and Two Shell’s remix of Sugababes’ ‘Round Round’ — because why not?

Dresden ‘All Night Long — The Carpet Shop, London’

In these frosty winter months, sometimes you need to stick the kettle on, set the heating on to full whack, and treat yourself to a six-hour odyssey of a mix. So it feels like an act of public service, that Manfredas and Ivan Smagghe chose to upload the recording of their all-night long set from Peckham’s Carpet Shop back in October. Typically mind-bending, with generous helpings of luxurious chug and spacey acid squelches — this mix is Dresden at their eyes-rolling-into-the-back-of-your-head finest. Go on, you deserve it.

TraTraTrax Sound Sistema (Verraco, DJ Lomalinda & Nyksan) ‘Crack Issue 149 Cover Mix’

Do you want to hear a nearly three hour mix from three of club music’s brightest talents? Then look no further. The co-founders of Colombian label TraTraTrax go in across the duration of their Crack cover mix, barelling through the pulsating rhythms and melting bassweight that has become their calling card, with forays into warped pop, menacing techno, murky garage and pacey guaracha. It’s masterful b3b that underlines why they’re the names on everyone’s lips and shakers of everyone’s hips.

TSVI all production mix! for SHERELLE on BBC Radio 6 Music

SHERELLE’s ‘virtual club’ The Sweatbox is an essential fixture in the radio calendar, inviting clubland’s finest DJs to show their chops with a tight half hour of power. The latest instalemt comes from TSVI, the co-founder of London-based club Nervous Horizon which SHERELLE declares “has literally carried our scene for a very long time.” He’s undoubtedly been a linchpin in the sphere of experimental club music, which his mix of entirely his own productions reflects. There’s an emphasis on bass and breaks, building up a sweltering atmospheres which at times is cut through by trancey melodies and even an effectively deployed George Kranz sample.

fabric presents Sama' Abdulhadi

Sama' Abdulhadi asserts herself as one of the most captivating DJs in the world across this monumental addition to fabric’s legendary mix series. It starts with the bouncy opening bars of Khainz ‘The Drift’, which soon surges with intense synth crescendos towards trancey bliss, then plummets back to earth via thick, juddering basslines — all before the first blend has even played out. From there, the mix showcases Sama’’s singular blend of techno, hip hop and psytrance with distinct Levantine influence. Standout moments include the slickness with which Palestinian MC Walaa Sbait’s vocals are merged into the techno pulse, the anxious synths of Lutgens track ‘ASMR’, and the climactic close on the Ammar 808 remix of Acid Arab’s Laba Staifia’, with its urgent vocals and unconventional rhythms leaving a lasting impression.

DJ SWISHA BOOTY BOUNCE WORKOUT 4 NAAFI on NTS

This may be implicit given its inclusion on this list, but this Jersey Club-filled mix by DJ SWISHA is truly one of the most enjoyable hours of music we’ve heard all year. Showcasing everything which makes the genre great Ipacey, booty-shakin’ beats and rauncy vocals to match), alongside some hip hop-infused techno, it’s guaranteed to elevate your mood and have you hankering for a steamy night on the dancefloor.

Bake ‘RA.909’

10 years in the making, Bake’s contribution to the RA podcast is well worth the wait. The Glasgow-based DJ’s “very UK” mix draws together dubstep, leftfield techno, speed dembow and a JD REID mashup featuring Daft Punk and D-Malice’s iconic UK funky ‘Gabryelle (Refix)’ for an hour and 45 minutes that delivers on rhythm and bass, and then some. The head of the Sub Club-based party series Spirit tends to lean towards more ambient and downtempo sounds in his C to the Power of X radio show, but this mix goes full pelt from minute one until Bake masterfully draws proceedings to a close in the last quarter of an hour or so. For a man who presents himself as as much of an appreciator of music as a player of it, it is only right that Bake’s RA.909 is a true ode to the art of DJing.

Lukas Wigflex on Rinse FM November 8

He’s done it again. Back on the Rinse FM buttons, this time his first as a resident, Lukas Wigflex weaves through his trademark wonk, some Jorg Kunig, of course, techno, and, in a subtle nod to station founder Geeneus, some vintage Pay As U Go. The last half an hour sees the Nottingham native up the ante and dip into his dubstep and leftfield bass collection, drawing for stonkers like Rhyw’s ‘Wolf Town’ and more.

Overmono ‘Boiler Room: Manchester’

Tessela and Truss link up under their Overmono guise for Boiler Room’s biggest Manchester showing to date at The Warehouse Project, featuring a healthy spread of live equipment from synths to keys, and a heavy rotation of their own productions. Dublin’s For Those I Love also makes an appearance for a special rendition of Overmono’s ‘I Have A Love’ remix, performed live to a rapturous room.

Jossy Mitsu ‘Fact Mix 936’

Not satisfied with asserting her status as one of the world’s finest “DJs’ DJs”, morphing into one half of electro-powered robo-duo BLUMITSU, Jossy Mitsu has thrown down the gauntlet and delivered a flawless 100% production mix for Fact magazine that touches base on hip hop, trap, house, bass, electro, jungle, and footwork. Capping off a 2023 which has included tours in North America and Asia, you’ll be left begging the question “what can’t she do?” after listening to this set. Unreleased, archive and forthcoming tracks from herself, BLUMITSU and CELIINE, the Rinse FM resident’s trap-oriented alias, are littered throughout the hour and 15 minutes, with the only IDable tune her contribution to the epic ‘Night Slugs Classix Remixed’ compilation which came out earlier this year.

HOLLY b2b Machinedrum at The DoLaB, Coachella

Recorded at Coachella back in April and released to the masses this month, HOLLY and Machinedrum’s back-to-back set was a sure way to shake up Coachella’s DoLaB stage, kicking off with a few hefty bass cuts mixed at rapidfire pace from one to the next. Flicking through everything from dubstep to jungle with a handful of serious club edits in between, this hasty set could have sent crowds flying for hours.

Namasenda ‘Boiler Room: Stockholm’

Swedish hyperpop star and PC Music affiliate Namasenda makes a Boiler Room appearance on home turf in Stockholm following the release of her recent EP, ‘Ambrosia’. Entirely performed live, Namasenda’s set includes tracks new and old from her extensive discography, closing out on a high-energy performance of her 2017 crowd pleaser, ‘Donuts’.

Más Tiempo (Skepta & Jammer) in The Lab LDN

After championing the grime scene, Más Tiempo, AKA Skepta and Jammer, have been waving the house music flag. Capturing an all-new audience as well as encouraging their previous audience to give house a try, the pair whipped up a storm with their Lab LDN set. Killing two birds with one stone, the boys have not only delivered a set at Mixmag’s Lab but also as a Cover Mix. Filled with unreleased, self-produced gems, this b2b set saw had to end with Skepta’s viral new banger, ‘Can’t Play Myself (A Tribute To Amy)’.

Jay Jay Revlon ‘Boiler Room x Coach: London’

Jay Jay Revlon transforms the Boiler Room into the ballroom with this set. Kicking off with the legendary Paul Johnson track ‘Get Get Down’ you know you’re in safe hands and there is plenty more bangers to come. Featuring Craig David to Cardi B, this mix is perfect for any setting from Monday morning motivation to pre-drinks.

Bored Lord ‘Crack Issue 149 Mix’

You can always rely on Bored Lord to provide a brilliant mix. For this one she plays with ‘90s breakbeat alongside some of her own new work such as the almost hip hop sounding track ‘Luv’. Diving deeper into more bass as the mix goes on, Bored Lord can’t help but also throw in a few classics such as The Prodigy’s ‘Smack My Bitch Up’ and Janet Jackson’s ‘Empty’. This mix is really worth a listen to understand Daria Lord’s inspirations behind her recent album.
