Get to know Klose One, the Rinse FM resident mixing the sound of London
The 33-year-old's crates hold a wealth of funky house and techno to hardcore and progressive
Despite wanting to divide his DJ and producer pseudonyms, he likes his overarching sound to “represent where it comes from, while keeping it fresh and exciting” – something that was clear from the get-go. His moniker stems from slapping the word ‘one’ onto the end of his graff name, and fits perfectly with his daring style of mixing: “When I was younger and I was trying to mix as many genres as possible together, a lot of the mixes would come off like, ‘That was a close one!’”.
Considering his UK-orientated tastes, it makes sense that one of his favourite labels at the moment is Dext Records. “They offer a similar aesthetic to what I do”, he notes; “it’s techno-ey, but there are also a lot of UK sub-genres running through it”.
Unsurprisingly, Ruari has strong opinions regarding London nightlife, and particularly about Hackney’s latest batch of draconian licensing laws: “It makes you wonder who takes the risk of opening a club in London these days when they’ve got so much up against it”. In spite of this, he remains positive: “The London music scene is so important that I don’t think it will ever be fully defeated – but it does look like a hard battle.” One thing’s for sure: not many people are better positioned to lead the fight-back.
