New festival CURRENTS to be held in abandoned Power Plant in Berlin

A new festival, CURRENTS, is set to debut this October in an abandoned power plant in Berlin.

The electronic music day event will take place in south Berlin at an old power plant, E-WERK Luckenwalde that closed in 1989.

Curated by music production and Romanian DJ duo Khidja, the line-up includes, Suzanne Ciani, Lena Willikens with Marylou, Dopplereffekt and Alicia Carrera with music starting at 3:PM through to 1:AM.

Running from the power plant location, CURRENTS claim they will be one of the first 100% carbon negative electronic music and performance festivals as they will be powering the event with locally sourced waste wood chips to generate electricity.

CURRENTS is described as an “amalgam of live contemporary art and electronic music, presenting a mix of internationally acclaimed artists intertwined with emerging acts.”

It adds: “CURRENTS will create a hyper-attentive environment where every tone is charged to the maximum. Space and time will appear to deform and dissolve and sound will become a door into a world beyond.

“Performances will transform into deep listening sessions, critically and politically engaged; they will echo and reflect a rare archival body of works that have been largely marginalised by the history of avant-garde music and sound art.”

The festival is a non-profit event with funds going towards supporting “an international community of artists and cultural workers existentially threatened by climate change, pandemics, wars, displacement and economic inequality”.
