10 people injured following shooting outside New York nightclub

A group of 16 to 20-year-olds were wounded in the incident

10 people have been injured following a “senseless” shooting outside a New York City nightclub, police have confirmed.

A group of 16 to 20-year-olds were waiting to enter Queens venue Amazura Concert Hall on Wednesday, January 1, where a private memorial was being held for a teen.

At around 11:15PM, three or four men reportedly approached the group and opened fire. They were then believed to have run away, before entering a car with an out-of-state number plate and fleeing.

Philip Rivera, New York’s Police Department’s chief of patrol, said during a conference on Thursday that the NYPD believe around 30 shots were fired at the group. Police and medics arrived at the scene shortly after the incident.

Of the 15 people who were standing outside the venue, 10 were wounded. According to police, six females and four males were rushed to hospital with “non-life threatening injuries”, where they’re expected to make a recovery.

Rivera also said that while the motive is not known for the "senseless" shooting, police do not believe it was an act of terrorism. No arrests have been made at this time.

In a statement posted on Instagram following the attack, Amazura said that those behind the venue were “deeply saddened by the recent and unfortunate isolated incident that occurred”.

“Our hearts go out to all those affected by this senseless act. We are working closely with law enforcement to ensure a thorough investigation and to help bring those responsible to justice,” the post reads.

They urged anyone with information on the incident to come forward by contacting the police. “Your assistance is vital in addressing this tragic event,” they wrote.
