Melbourne club The Mercat Basement is closing down

Developers strike again

Much loved Melbourne haunt The Mercat Basement will close its doors on February 11.

The club is opposite the city's Queen Victoria Market (QVM), which is being redeveloped, and the site is expected to be turned into high-rise apartment towers.

"Unfortunately the time has come for us to deliver the bad news. Due to the QVM redevelopment, we will be closing down. We'll save the soppy shit for February, but in the mean time, please join us over the next few months for some last dances," reads a post on The Mercat's Facebook page.

Club boss Daragh Kan said: "Over the past eight years, we've been proud to be a part of Melbourne's world-class clubbing scene. While it's a sad time for all of us, we're thankful that we've got a few months under our belt to give it a proper send off."

The sweaty underground venue hosted the likes of Jeff Mills, Darkside, Four Tet, among many others since 2008, and was a regular spot for Animals Dancing parties and the scene of Tornado Wallace and Otologic's C-Grade nights.
