Mahalia launches workshops to help women of colour learn music industry skills

Workshops include DJing, music production, event management and content creation

Mahalia has just announced a new series of workshops, called Sisters in Sound available to young women of colour who are hoping to break into the music industry.

Sisters in Sound will be run by youth-led charity Small Green Shoots, is part of Mahalia's Tough as You mentorship scheme with Dr Martens.

It is open to young women aged 16-24 who are interested in the music industry.

This scheme comprises of four interactive workshops covering DJing, music production, content editing and live event management; it will conclude with an International Women’s Day finale at London’s Tileyard in Kings Cross where participants can show their newly learnt skills to a live audience.

The DJing and music production workshops will be taking place on Monday February 28 and Tuesday March 1; the events management workshops will be taking place on March 3 and March 4; and the videography sessions will take place on February 21 and February 22.

All the workshops will be taking place in various locations around north and north-west London.

Mahalia said about the project: “I honestly couldn’t be prouder to be a part of the Tough As You initiative. Supporting an organisation like Small Green Shoots just felt right to me.

"After all of the help and support that they directly gave to me when I was a brand new artist, getting to do something like this with them really is a full circle moment. I’m looking forward to meeting everyone taking part and can’t wait to see the showcase!”
