Ireland reportedly set to allow clubs to re-open from tomorrow

Clubs closed on Boxing Day in Ireland as part of wider COVID measures

Nightclubs in Ireland will reportedly be given the go-ahead to re-open their doors from tomorrow, according to Virgin Media News.

Clubs and hospitality venues were first closed on Boxing Day as part of wider restrictions to curb the spread of the Omicron COVID variant.

However, according to Virgin Media News, government ministers have met throughout the day today to discuss the imminent lifting of measures throughout the country - with some expected to be axed as early as tomorrow.

Virgin Media News Journalist Richard Chambers tweeted earlier this evening: "It's happening. Cabinet plans to scrap most restrictions from tomorrow. Pubs and restaurant hours to return to normal. Nightclubs reopen. FULL attendance at indoor and outdoor events."

Ireland had only allowed clubs to re-open for the first time since the pandemic began on October 31, and were shuttered less than 2 months later.

Other rules introduced on Boxing Day Include table service only in hospitality venues, social distancing, a maximum of six adults able to sit together and a band on multiple table bookings — mandatory masks were also expected.

Live music venues were also expected to operate at 50% capacity.

Earlier this month Mixmag found that those involved in the nightlife sector in Ireland felt "forgotten" throughout the pandemic.

This came after it was announced that the Irish government was considering paying basic income to about 2,000 artists, musicians and other entertainers for the next three years.

Many have claimed that this news felt like a slap in the face by the government, after a lack of tangible support since March 2020.
