On ‘Ritual’, Ujin Ray gets to work on sampling 80s electro and disco hits but still makes his own by adding some analogue synths. The ensuing disco noir reminds us of those exciting times when deep house was killed off by Ivan Smahgge’s fresh new electro sounds (we’re seeing Helena Hauff start to do something similar today, though naturally without the impact it had in 2000).

Forlorn and existential with sharp percussion and chugging synth bass, dark disco sounds like these are proving a good remedy to the plastic nu-disco sound.
