Get to know Julia Govor
Russian-born, New York-based techno explorer
Govor, she’s literally smiling ear-to-ear. And this isn’t out of the ordinary for the New York-based producer and DJ. She couldn’t be in a better place right now. “This is what makes me happy, that I’m in music and some guy from Kenya has heard my tracks,” she says. “I’m ready to meet new people and see new countries through my music.”
Her road into music hasn’t necessarily been the most conventional. Raised in a small Russian military town, Govor’s love of music began at an early age when her parents signed her up for piano and singing lessons. She performed as a cassette DJ at a local club and became a singer in a military band called Moryachka. Then in 2004 she landed a job at MTV where she would interview artists like Richie Hawtin and David Guetta, before moving to New York in 2013 to pursue her dream of being a club DJ. Now, after gigs at WMC and Time Warp US in 2015, she’s about to hit new levels of recognition with her sultry blend of deep, trippy transcendent techno.
When talking about her upcoming ‘Open Possibility’ EP she can barely contain her excitement – hardly surprising, given that Ricardo Villalobos and Kamran Sadeghi are on remix duties. “It’s the most important release of my life. All my ten years of experience are in it,” she says. And that shines through on the very first spin.
‘Open Possibility’ is out soon on BodyParts; another EP will follow on Cocoon
