XL Recordings Chapter VI
6/10
Before they were shifting units by the likes of Adele and The xx, XL was mostly a rave label, and every year until 1995 they'd release a compilation of their biggest hits.
After The Prodigy's success the label started to branch out into other genres, but fast-forward 20 years and it's picking up where it left off with 'Chapter VI', featuring some of dance music's most gifted producers. There's old-skool hardcore by Special Request and new-school grime from Novelist & Mumdance, industrial rhythms by Powell and deep, acidic tech from Hugo Massien.
But it's inconsistent: the artists have all released better music on other labels and it feels more like a branding exercise than a snapshot of dance music in 2015.
