UK hardcore pioneer MC Duke has died

UK rapper and hardcore pioneer MC Duke has passed away, Suburban Base Records confirmed on Sunday (April 21).

"It is with profound sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of our dear friend, MC Duke,” reads a post on Instagram from the label, with which the late MC frequently collaborated.

MC Duke, real name Kashif Adham, was best known for his formative work in UK hip hop, hardcore, and jungle in the ‘80s and ‘90s, influencing a new school of artists.

His label, Hard Disk, became a home for tracks fusing jungle, hardcore, and hip hop, collaborating with the likes of Loop Da Loop and Charlie Sloth over the years.

“MC Duke solidified his status as a legend in the UK music scene,” Suburban Base said. “As a forefather of UK hip hop, his influence reverberates through generations, laying the foundation for the vibrant UK rap scene that we know today, and we expect many will pay tribute to him following this devastating news.”

“Since the early 90s, we have had the privilege of calling him a friend and collaborator, with the most releases on our Suburban Base sister imprint, Boogie Times, witnessing his unparalleled talent and unwavering dedication to music,” the label wrote.

Duke began his career at a DMC World Championships after party when he challenged a rapper who claimed to be unbeatable, emerging victorious.

Derek Boland of Music of Life Records was watching the show and subsequently signed MC Duke along with label head Simon Harris after the rapper performed live in Harris’ office, rather than sending a demo tape.
