Marcus Kaye, aka Marcus Intalex, is already considered a ‘master’ of drum & bass, but under his Trevino moniker (named after the wisecracking golfing legend) he’s ‘open’-ed up a new career in finely-crafted techno and house, one that suits him to a ‘tee’. Sorry – Kaye is a huge golf fan, y’see.

That may hint that Front (which, continuing the overall theme, has nine tracks, soon to be followed by a Back nine) is merely a semi-serious sideline, but the musical evidence proves otherwise. This is simple but devastating dancefloor weaponry.

Trevino brings the qualities of his other work – pumped-up tempos, intricate melodies, breathtakingly crisp beats – to bear throughout Front, particularly Black Cat’s chattering, Far Eastern-flavoured deep acid trip, the witching hour dark tech of Defektor Dub and the emotive, grand Italo house of Bergmann. This is 4/4 music with balls.
