London nightclub Tiger Tiger has closed after 26 years

Infamous London nightspot a statement has announced its closure, amid plans to develop the venue into a hotel.

Tiger Tiger confirmed that the 1,700-capacity Haymarket-based nightclub, bar and restaurant had shuttered last week (October 17) via a statement on its website, writing: "Tiger Tiger London has now closed."

"Thank you to all patrons, promoters, DJs, managers, staff members and partners for years of incredible memories," the statement finishes.

According to The Caterer, a planning application has been submitted to Westminster Council to convert Haymarket House - the eight-storey building Tiger Tiger currently occupies - into a "507-room hotel."

The 15-page plan, submitted by Centro Planning Consultancy, also details intentions to convert the building's roof into a "plant screen."

It is unknown if Tiger Tiger's sudden closure has been announced in connection with the planning application, that is still awaiting approval from the local authority.

Tiger Tiger's flagship, 18,000-sq ft Haymarket branch first opened in 1998, and featured four dancefloors and five bars — with each floor playing a different genre of music. Alongside its Cardiff and the now-closed Leeds locations, the brand became eponymous with "trashy nights out" in the 00s.

In 2007, Tiger Tiger Haymarket was targeted by a failed car bomb — orchestrated by Bilal Abdullah and Kafeel Ahmed, both arrested following the Glasgow Airport terror attack the next day.
