Skream performs rare old skool dubstep set at Coachella

Skream performed a one-off old skool dubstep set this weekend at Coachella, his first in years.

The producer and DJ took to California’s Coachella this weekend where he performed at the festival’s iconic Do LaB stage on the second weekend, Friday, April 22.

Skream first teased the idea on Twitter, asking fans: “Do I play a #dubstep set at Coachella tomorrow or not?????? Playing in between Ivy Lab and The Glitch Mob so feel like it would make sense… What ya reckon?”

“Fuck it. It’s happening. Coachella don’t make me regret this Hahahahhaa,” tweeted Skream ahead of his Friday slot.

Videos later emerged on Twitter seeing the crowd in uproar as he drops Jakes & Joker’ 1999 track ‘3K Lane’. The producer mentioned ahead of his performance that he’d found an old drive with unreleased music from the likes of Mala and Benga.

“Me and a certified legend of the 140 realm are talking about at some point doing a mad out of the blue pop-up party in like a 250-300 cap in London,” Skream told Mixmag in a video interview in 2020.

“Literally like trying to find the smallest venue we can do it, not a fucking public toilet, just literally out of the blue. No money, loads of people will be gutted but fuck it,” he said.

In the meantime, Skream has recorded and played multiple old skool dubstep mixes and released a handful of new 140 tracks, all of which he reportedly made in “just under a month”.

The producer also teased a team-up with fellow trailblazer Benga in December, tweeting: “The boys are back in town…. Skream X Benga 2.0..... 2022 we’re having it” last year.

Despite this, the pair have yet to release anything new together. The producers last teamed up in 2003 on the release of ‘The Judgement’, and later linked back up for a BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix.
