Berlin club Griessmühle, which closed in 2020 after eight years in operation, has been memorialised with a plaque outside the former venue.

The plaque was placed outside the Neukölln club last week by anonymous Berlin group Steinzeit.alter – AKA Stone Age – who are on a mission to enshrine shuttered institutions across the German capital.

The plaque, which reads ‘Greissmuehle 2012 - 2020’, is emblazoned with the club’s logo, and features a small vase to place flowers. Steinzeit.alter shared a series of photos on Instagram of the plaque being erected outside the venue, which formerly sat along the River Spree near Sonnenallee.

Griessmühle closed in February 2020 after its rental contract ended. Before its closure, protestors took to the streets in Berlin calling for the club to remain open, and for protection against further venue closures.

A petition was also launched to keep Griessmühle’s doors open, gathering more than 50,000 signatures. “If we do not act now, yet another piece of Berlin club culture will disappear,” they wrote.

In January, Steinzeit.alter placed a gravestone honouring Berlin nightclub Watergate outside the former venue, just a month after it was shuttered due to financial pressures.

The memorial was erected outside the venue on Falckensteinstraße where the venue sat for more than 22 years, reading ‘Watergate 2002 - 2024’ across the gravestone head.

According to the anonymous group, the tombstone aimed to honour the “thriving, cultural, diverse life” in Berlin, following the venue’s closure in December 2024.

“Given the fact that we've had to swap countless clubs in office space over the last few years, it's just as important to remember as it once was,” they said.
