Selects: Midnight Operator

Every week, Mixmag invites the world's most revered artists to bring us an Apple Music playlist, hand-selected by them and curated especially for your listening pleasure. From Disclosure to Bonobo, the Selects series has seen a wealth of artists dig deep for old school gems and fresh new beats.

As far as musical siblings go, not many have as much experience and technical prowess as our next Selects act. Both Mathew and Nathan Jonson are esteemed producers in their own right and they know their way around a live set up.

Mathew has been putting forward his unique strain of dance music for around 15 years, releasing via imprints like Perlon, M_nus, Crosstown Rebels and his own label Wagon Repair. Tracks like 'Decompression' have become dancefloor classics and his recent fabric mix showcased his vast array of productions and impeccable technique.

Brother Nathan has been producing music for a similar amount of time as Hrdvsion too, and has released two solo albums alongside countless EPs.

To say that the pair are well across the electronic music spectrum would be an understatement.

When the two come together, they're Midnight Operator, an act that seamlessly blends together their house and techno sounds to make something really quite special. While the actual releases are sparse, the performances are something to behold and they'll be playing at We Concur tomorrow. Put it this way, it's not to be missed.

As expected, their Selects playlist is a heady mix of jazz, house, acid and, of course, some wonderfully weird shit thrown in for good measure. This is how a record bag should look.

Bambooman 'Bodies'

Just heard a new EP by Bambooman that's coming out in August and decided to check out some older tracks. This one is gold. Speedy, gliding, but also super chill. M

Doc Daneeka Featuring Seven Davis Jr. 'What's It Gonna Be'

Here we have some calm and confident funk. I've opened many sets with this track as it's perfect for setting the stage for what I wanna do. N

Oneohtrix Point Never - Boring Angel

If you haven't seen the music video for this, you need to stop what you're doing and watch it now. Emoji's, actually expressing emotions...go figure! This wrenches my heart from my chest. Beautiful video for a beautiful song. N

Timothy Blake 'Squiggles' (The Mole Remix)

An epic ten-minute remix from my good friend Colin. M

Jimmy Edgar 'Tik Tok'

This is one of those tracks that I listen to in my headphones while DJ'ing and I ask myself "Aaaare they ready? Aretheyreadyaretheyreadyaretheyready?" This is a place I love to get to in a set....when this track is the only place to go. N

Lafawndah 'Tan'

Absolutely love the chanting kind of style through this tune. Also, might just be my favourite beat ever. N

José James 'Desire' (Moodymann remix)

An old favourite released on Gilles Peterson's label a few years back. Awesome Vocal! M

Global Goon 'Looking Glass'

Here's another track I'm always thrilled to DJ out. Proper Acid on a fantastic label! When this one comes on it's party time! N

Cobblestone Jazz 'Northern Lights'

A track from the last Cobblestone Jazz EP released on Itiswhatitis. We had some great studio time recently so expect some new music hopefully soon! M

Cults 'Go Outside'

And of course, there’s always a last song... N
