Selects: Jasper James
The Scottish selector shows off his impeccable taste
Selects is the playlist series on Apple Music where we ask our favourite DJs to delve into their record bags and curate a playlist that showcases the new ones rocking the dancefloors and the classics that always bang. This week, Glaswegian DJ Jasper James steps up.
Last year when Jasper joined the In Session ranks with a self-assured and confident mix, we said that he had "DJing his blood" and it couldn't be more on point.
His dad is Harri from Harri & Domenic, one half of the long-serving Sub Club residents and he's been following in his father's footsteps with a residency of his own at Phonox in Brixton, the new hotspot opened by the team behind XOYO and The Nest.
Every Saturday he takes control of the club and invites special guests down to join him for the occasion. It's a testament to how far the 24 year-old selector has come and it's not just showing in his DJ sets, his productions are building up steam as well.
He's released via Optimo Trax and Matt Tolfrey's Leftroom Records and we even premiered Skream's amazing remix of his track 'Motel One'.
For his Selects playlist, Jasper has strayed from the beaten track and shown us just how deep his record collection goes. There are tracks from DJ Fudge, DJ Pierre and even Diana Ross, all of which sound great both on the dancefloor and in your headphones. Enjoy.

Burnt Island Casuals - Grouse House
I put this track in my Essential Mix a couple years back and people still ask me what the hell that track is that goes 'ooohh yaaa'. Its’ actually made by two guys from Glasgow, one being my dad and the other 'The Revenge'. The swinging percussion and building synth line, along with the African style vocal just seems to drive the dancefloor crazy.
Shina Williams & His African Percussionist - Aboju Logan
A super heavy afro-cut. Impossible to find on original 12” and often close to £200 if you do find one. Great track for both the start and end of the night. It’s around 12mins long and it’s one of those tracks you just don’t want to stop. Pure positive cosmic vibes in electronic form.
Toto Chiavetta - Take Care
Brand new track I came across recently and the first time I’d heard of Toto Chiavetta - I’m definitely interested to hear more from this guy. Pulsating synths and hypnotising spaced out sounds sit atop solid Chicago grooves.
The Congos - Fisherman
One of my favourite reggae tracks. Light a phatty to this and you will not be disappointed.
DJ Pierre - Fall
Classic Chicago house from the don himself. This came out on Strictly Rhythm and still sounds so fresh and current to this day - when the high pitch female vocal comes in, it’s pure ecstasy.
DJ Fudge - Pedogbepa
Afro house that always picks up the spirit on the dancefloor. No idea what is being said but I still mange to sing along to the full song.
Yamiano - Yam Yam
Classic house track. When the big piano stabs eventually come in around the minute mark it’s game over. Hands in the air, here we fukin go!
Diana Ross - The Boss
Disco at its best. Perfect end of night track that leaves everyone in good spirits. Diana Ross' high pitch voice during the chorus gives me goosebumps every time without failure.
Peace Division - What Is This Sound
An absolute classic. That groovy bassline and the hypnotic vocal, talking about entering the dancefloor and hearing house and techno for the first time. Still one of my all time favourites.
Skinnyman - Loves Gone From The Streets
Sampled Todd Rundgren's "Sometimes I Don’t Know What To Feel". UK Hip hop classic that always gets put on at our afterparties from when we were teenagers and still to this day. Reminds me of being underage drinking bottles of buckfast on the street playing this out on my 'Motarola Razor'
Busta Rhymes & Janet Jackson - What's It Gonna Be
Another afterparty classic. Timbaland on the production - the beat literally blows my mind. I can listen to this track over and over again and I don’t think I will ever get sick of it or understand anything that Busta Rhymes is saying.
Papa Washington Trio - Calling All Dancers
This was the first house album I ever listened to. I must have been around 10 years old and I thought it was garbage and didn't understand house music at all but because my dad produced it, I was proud and pretended to love it. Fast forward 15 years I fukin love this track and the full album. Big track for me when i play out - house at its best. (Not being biased!)
Tokyo Black Star - Caballero (Radio Slave's Innervision Remix)
Reminds me of going to Subculture on a Saturday at the Sub Club in Glasgow for the first time. Dark, dingy, low ceilings, sweating and dancing to this beauty.
