Selects: Dusky

Each week, Mixmag invites the world's most revered artists to bring us an Apple Music playlist, hand-selected by them and curated especially for your listening pleasure.

There's little to say about the Dusky duo that hasn't already been expressed. The London standouts stepped out seemingly directly onto the fast track to success after releasing their 2011 debut LP. Five years later, 'Outer' has arrived to high acclaim, fully rounding out the duo's massive few years of domination across the scene with Essential Mix spotlights, headline performances and the rightful naming of Dusky as label heads, sharp talents and trusted tastemakers.

That ferocity - in both sound and ability to capture an audience - has allowed Dusky to push ahead as an all-encompassing influence rather than simply be defined by a handful of catchy tracks. 'Outer' demonstrates exactly that forethought as a rare, but appreciated collection of electronic songs built and highlighted in the traditional album format.

Dusky are on board for our latest edition of Selects, including a few choice picks from their own 'Outer' as well as other tunes they've been rinsing on the 2016 circuit.

The pair land next at Groundwater in San Diego alongside headliners like Disclosure, Justin Martin and Damian Lazarus. The inaugural festival is hosted by FNGRS CRSSD, organisers behind the successful breakout and bi-annual festival CRSSD. Tickets are available here.

Dusky 'Songs Of Phase'

One of the darker, clubbier tracks from our recent album ‘Outer’, ‘Songs Of Phase’ was influenced by big techno records from the 90s and old Belgian rave sounds. It features an old Ursula Rucker sample and has been a big moment in both our live sets and DJ gigs.

Dusky ‘Ingrid Is A Hybrid'

The first piece of music that we revealed from ‘Outer’, ‘Ingrid Is A Hybrid’ has been a staple in our sets all summer long. It was influenced by a lot of 90s dance and electronica.

808 State ‘In Yer Face’ (Bicep Remix)

The Bicep guys always deliver, and this remix is no different.

Konstantin Sibold ‘Mutter’

This dark, trancey techno track has been a hidden gem for us in recent months.

Funk D’Void ‘Diabla’ (Funk D’Void’s Heavenly Mix)

A melodic techno classic and arguably Funk D’Void’s finest hour. Always does the business.

Mark Henning ‘Yes Yes’

Mark Henning is an incredibly consistent producer and arguably an unsung hero of the UK house and techno scene. ‘Yes Yes’ shows a melodic side from his, bolstered by some intricate 808 percussion work.

Dusky 'Sort It Out Sharon' (Instrumental Club Mix)

The original of ‘Sort It Out Sharon’ featured a freestyle from godfather of grime Wiley and has been getting great reactions in our live shows, but it’s this stripped back club instrumental that has felt more appropriate for our DJ gigs.

Pearson Sound ‘Xlb’

Heavy drum work club track from one of the most innovative - and often experimental - UK producers of recent years.

Jerome Hill ‘It’s Time For The’

UK underground veteran Jerome Hill slices up a classic Chicago house vocal sample on this jacking and percolating club track.

Trevino ‘Desecrate’

Trevino aka Marcus Intalex has been on serious form this year. Taken from his four-track Hot Flush EP, this is one of many Trevino tracks that has been in our sets this year.

Pangaea ‘Rotor Soap’

A quirky and effective acid club track from Hessle Audio’s Pangaea, which was part of his recent ‘In Drum Play’ album.

Dusky 'Runny Nose'

Again taking influence from a lot of the darker Belgian techno, as well as UK rave, ‘Runny Nose’ is another of the club focused tracks from our album ‘Outer’. Props to Suggs for letting us sample his mental inebriated rant for the intro!
