"'Listen To My Voice' was one of those special tracks the producer, Jdan Productions, and I churned out in one studio session," she tells Mixmag. "It was around a time I was going through communication problems in a relationship that was perfect in every other area. I found myself feeling suffocated, not being able to express how I felt, in fear of making him feel frustrated. On the flip side, I felt sympathy for him because he was struggling to express his own emotions, in part because of his troubled past.
"I wrote the lyrics to this song in English and Japanese because being half Japanese myself, I realise miscommunication so deeply resonates within Japanese culture; emotions are dismissed, brushed under the carpet and you can only imagine the kind of unhappiness this can cause. So, 'Listen To My Voice' is a kind of plea for greater openness in a relationship - so that people might be encouraged to be more open without fear of judgment."
Alongside its very deep-rooted, emotive purpose, the track pulsates with a sultry energy, with an uplifting atmosphere to pull the lyricism to fruition which complements the infectious melodies.
