Printworks could re-open in 2026, as plans submitted for "cultural venue" on nightclub site

Printworks may re-open in 2026, with property developers submitting plans for a "cultural venue" within the former nightclub.

Plans sent by British Land and AustralianSuper to Southwark Council outline plans to transform the 6,000-capacity club into a “cultural venue” — consisting of office spaces, an exhibition space and a live music venue.

Printworks spent six years in Surrey Quays, becoming an internationally-recognised nightclub — however it was closed in 2022 due to redevelopment plans in the area.

Property developers are currently in exclusive talks with former Printworks operators Broadwick Live, concerning the operation of a planned music venue within the former printing press.

If the plans are accepted, developers would team up with Broadwick Live to retain half of the site as a venue, whilst the other half would become offices and shops as previously planned.

The development of the building will see the preservation of its original aesthetic such as its industrial style and printing presses.

Printworks’ iconic room the Press Halls would remain, and the plans ask for live music events, concerts, immersive art exhibitions and corporate events to be hosted here.

The famous Inkwells will also stay the same, yet host immersive exhibitions, multi-disciplinary art shows and intimate music events, according to council documents.

Despite some of the existing architecture remaining untouched, a brand-new rooftop has been submitted in the plans as a space for performing, rehearsals, product launches and curated talks.

The plans continue to request a series of office spaces inside with a view of the Press Halls for meetings, conferences and corporate events.
