Papa San (Machinedrum remix)

When it comes to reggae, Fashion Records have always had it on lock. The prolific UK institution has put out records by General Levy, Cutty Ranks and Bunny General and it's been every two-stepper's go-to for over three decades.

Pretty much all strands of bass music from r'n'b, dubstep, drum 'n' bass and trap have dancehall and reggae at their core so it's seems like the right time that some of these seminal tracks got a 2016 makeover.

Enter Jon Sheppard, A&R and owner of Nice Up! Records. He's releasing the 'Inna Nice Up! Fashion' compilation and it contains a treasure trove of re-imagined reggae classics by some of the best producers around.

Artists like Toddla T, Special Request and The Bug have all turned in edits but today we concentrate on Machinedrum's incredible remix of 'Perdominant' by Papa San. Having released on Ninja Tune and Planet Mu, the American beatmaker is well-versed when it comes to making future-facing bass music and his rendition of the classic is well worth a spin or two.

The classic vocals are left untouched but are now backed with fierce percussion stabs and washed out reggae chords. It's a metalic and steely new take on a track that screams sunshine. Fireeeee in the booth. Watch out for this one.
