More than 90% of Amsterdam residents participated in nightlife last year, according to a new report from research institutes VibeLab and PennPraxis, in collaboration with the Municipality of Amsterdam.

According to the Amsterdammers over nachtcultuur report, most city locals go out to bars, live shows and nightclubs “several times a month”, driving demand for night-time culture across the Dutch capital.

The report also found that festivals attract “highly engaged but less frequent visitors”, while the average spend on a night out is reportedly between €41 and €60, with most expenditure in Centrum and Zuid.

“This report shows it’s time to abandon the negative narrative that nightlife is dying,” says VibeLab co-founder and former Amsterdam Night Czar Mirik Milan.

“Instead, we are witnessing a cultural shift from alcohol-driven nightlife towards curated night culture that is community-based, safe and diverse. The demand for night culture is growing, particularly among younger audiences.”

The report also found that almost half of those surveyed prefer very late or open-ended closing times. Another 39.7% of people said they would favour more diverse options, while 64.3% favour affordability.

Elsewhere, it found that 61% of respondents travel beyond their home district for a night out, predominantly following “atmosphere, community, and programming”, while more than a third will travel for up to an hour.

“Night culture is more than a collection of venues and events,” VibeLab shared on Instagram alongside report findings. “It is a social fabric in which we experiment, safety and pleasure reinforce each other.”
