New York declares December 18 as Earl ‘DMX’ Simmons Day

New York State has announced that December 18 - DMX’s birthday - will be named ‘Earl “DMX” Simmons Day’ in honour of the late rapper.

In a statement made at his memorial service on Saturday, community activist Priscilla Echi revealed the news, adding: “his lyrics were rapped on the Senate floor by Senator Jamar Bailey who introduced a legislative resolution in his honour.”

The memorial was attended by thousands as his casket was carried by a monster truck through the streets on New York City this weekend. Thousands of motorcyclists followed in tribute to the rapper, who tragically passed away on April 9.

The memorial was also attended by his 15 children who filled the stage to pay respects to their father. “Our father is a king, our father is an icon,” said Xavier Simmons. “This man has deepened my ability to love.”

One of his youngest daughters, Sonovah, performed her own version of DMX’s ‘Slippin’, singing: “I’m growing, I'm learning to hold my head. My daddy's still holding my hand, so I gotta get up.”

DMX, who’s real name was Earl Simmons, died at age 50 after suffering a ‘catastrophic’ heart attack. He was admitted to intensive care and put on life support on April 2, passing seven days later.

Since the service, reports state that over $1 million has been raised for the late rapper’s family with the help of Balenciaga and Kanye West, who released tribute shirts featuring a graphic of DMX on the front. The long sleeved t-shirts were designed by Balenciaga and commissioned by Kanye’s brand Yeezy, selling at $200 each.

Kanye was amongst the memorial attendees on Saturday along with Busta Rhymes, Nas and Swizz Beats who each gave speeches, while Kanye performed Soul II Soul’s ‘Keep Moving On’ backed by a gospel choir.
